We do this by integrating curricular and co-curricular experiences; designing self-paced, accessible and engaging career education opportunities; and by creating opportunities for networking. You may not have fully settled on a path yet. Or you may have a general idea of where you want to go, but need to understand how to get there. That is completely okay—and a great place to start!

To get a better understanding of yourself, the possible paths that exist and the steps you’ll need to take to get there, you may want to:

  • Discover how your personality, interests and values may influence the types of careers that best suit you with PathwayU.
  • Investigate the potential in academic programs and how they can connect to your personal and professional journey through “What Can I Do With This Major?” (Access via your UD Career Center Canvas course)

You may have initiated your career development and you know what your post-education goal looks like. Maybe you have begun to develop some skills to prepare.

At this point, you could benefit from understanding all of the steps needed to get to that goal:

  • Engage with industry connections and build a professional network through Handshake and LinkedIn.
  • Prepare professional communication to best describe your unique strengths and help you gain experience, with resources such as BigInterview.
  • Chart your course to success by researching UD Career Outcomes and simulate industry workstyles through Forage.

You may have a firm idea of what your career path looks like and have engaged with your industry to prepare you for this journey. You have developed some transferable skills and are ready to apply what you’ve learned so far.

It’s time to gain further experience and prepare for your post-graduation destinations. To do this, you should:

  • Prepare your professional brand, including visiting the Career Center to take quality headshots for your LinkedIn and ensure your resume is stellar through drop-in hours.
  • Practice job search strategies, understand different types of experience and prepare for any application processes through the “Gaining Practical Experience” module in the Career Center Canvas site.
  • Familiarize yourself with job search engines, personalize filters and digests and be ready to apply for experiences on Handshake, LinkedIn or even by attending a career fair or meetup.

  • UD Career Center

    The UDCC helps students identify strengths, motivations and purpose, and translate their ambitions into opportunities through professional, educational and UD connections. The center supports all UD students and serves as a central hub for career and professional development at the institution. UDCC connects students with employers hiring for jobs and internships, provides one-on-one coaching and builds career development and education into academic and Student Life programs.

  • Agriculture and Natural Resources Summer Institute Research Experience

    Undergraduates interested in pursuing an advanced agricultural, natural resources or life sciences degree can participate in summer research and education experiences. Participants can develop a project, collect and analyze data, and present their results at a campus-wide summer symposium.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates
    Semester: Summer
    Location: UD campus
    Pay: $4,500 stipend (and housing in UD Residence Halls if needed)

  • Biden Institute Summer Internship Program

    Career-focused 8-10-week internships provide students hands-on experience in public policy, communications, event planning, and advocacy with non-profit organizations and government agencies.

     

    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates with a minimum 3.0 GPA
    Semester: Summer
    Location: Delaware, Washington, D.C., and other locations
    Pay: Amount set each year and by site

  • Biden School Legislative Fellows Program

    The experience offers a valuable opportunity to observe and contribute to political decision-making. Fellows assist Delaware General Assembly legislators address the state's critical issues through nonpartisan, in-depth research.

  • Center for Health Profession Studies

    The Center for Health Profession Studies assists students and alumni across all colleges in exploring and successfully transitioning to postgraduate education in health professions. The center supports students in academic and cocurricular preparation to enter health profession programs through advising and partnerships with academic units, student organizations and affiliated programs, and building a strong profile to apply to programs in medicine of all specialties—dentistry, physician assistant, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy, chiropractic, physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training and anesthesiology assistant.

  • Co-Curricular Coaching in the College of Arts & Sciences Student Success Center

    The co-curricular coaching team helps College of Arts & Sciences students succeed by connecting them with internships, research and other opportunities.

  • Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) Academic Year Fellows

    The CEI Academic Year Fellows program partially supports students who want to work part-time on an applied research project during the academic year. The end product of this project might be a written document (technical report, feature article, academic paper, journal, etc.) or a presentation. Fellow projects vary in length of time commitment and funding.

  • Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) Summer Fellows Program

    The program partially supports students who want to work part-time on a community-based research or creative project and combine it with other summer activities such as coursework and/or employment.

    Pay: $500—$3,000 stipend

  • Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) Summer Scholars Program

    The program provides highly motivated undergraduates the opportunity to immerse themselves in a community-based research or creative project under the direction of a faculty mentor. Scholars spend 10 weeks during the summer in full-time pursuit of their projects in partnership with a Delaware nonprofit, governmental, community-based action research or service-based corporate activity and simultaneously pursue academic reflection under the guidance of a UD faculty mentor.

  • Creative Leadership, Innovation and Service

    Explore your potential in leadership and service at UD! Whether you’re looking for a one-semester certificate in leading, an alternative break service program, becoming a TEDx speaker or attending campus events, they have myriad opportunities for you to get involved.

  • Delaware INBRE Biomedical Sciences Summer Research Scholars Program

    In a partnership with five state institutions, including UD, Christiana Care and Nemours Children’s Hospital, selected undergraduate students will carry out independent research projects while supported full-time under a mentor to gain knowledge of research techniques and make unique scholarly or original impacts on the biomedical sciences.


    Qualifications: Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents
    Semester: Summer
    Location: UD and other institutions within Delaware
    Pay: $5,000—$6,000

  • Extension Scholar Program

    A unique, hands-on, 10-week summer experiential learning environment under the guidance of extension agents or specialists. During this summer internship, students will follow Cooperative Extension's service learning model, implemented through one of Extension's four program areas: 4-H youth development, family and consumer sciences, lawn and garden and agriculture and natural resources. Summer scholar experiential learning may include designing and delivering educational programs, evaluating program impacts in the community, assisting with communications and more.

    Pay: $4,500 stipend

  • Finkel Fund in Support of Cultural Internships

    Undergraduate students pursuing a material culture-based internship with preference given to students whose focus is on preservation, conservation, administration, collections management, exhibition, research and services of museums.


    Eligibility: Undergraduate students
    Semester: Summer
    Grant Amount: Up to $3,000

  • Funding Available through Your Major and Academic Department

    Many majors and academic departments have an internship, research, experiential learning, field experience or study abroad need-based and merit funding available for their students. Check your academic program and department’s website for funding opportunities. Email or call your academic department if information is not available online.

  • Honors Enrichment Funds

    Funding for Honors College students pursuing activities related to their academic or professional pursuits.

  • Horn Entrepreneurship

    Horn Entrepreneurship combines a personalized approach with lessons from successful entrepreneurs and evidence-based best practices. Programs and opportunities are relevant, accessible and available to all students. The Horn educational experience combines hands-on, project-based learning with real-world challenges and extensive external engagement. The result is a special program that prepares students to adapt, thrive and lead in entrepreneurial roles with established companies, social ventures and startups.

  • Institute for Public Administration Legislative Researcher Program

    The UD Government Relations Office, in partnership with the Institute for Public Administration (IPA), employs an Undergraduate Legislative Researcher. The researcher works closely with the director and office staff to provide direct, nonpartisan legislative monitoring and research assistance.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates
    Semester: Winter and spring
    Pay: Research scholarship of $4,500​​

  • Institute for Public Administration Undergraduate Public Administration Fellows

    IPA’s Public Administration Fellows work closely with faculty or professional staff members on complex public policy research and public service projects for state, county and local governments and nonprofit organizations. Research areas include civic education and engagement, conflict resolution, economic development, education policy, healthcare policy, land-use planning, transportation, infrastructure, and water resources.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates with a minimum 3.4 GPA
    Semester: Year-round
    Pay: $4,000 scholarships for 400 hours of research

  • Legal Professional Preparatory Program (LP3)

    LP3 supports UD students who wish to pursue a career in law. It prepares students for law school and careers in related fields by creating a network of resources built through the University's students and alumni. LP3 allows students to attend networking events and workshops and receive mentoring, scholarships and more. LP3 is committed to supplying UD students with the tools and guidance necessary to pursue a career in law or related fields successfully.

     

  • Lerner College of Business & Economics Career Services

    The Lerner Career Services team helps Lerner College students with advising and connects them with leading executives and HR recruiters through networking events, internship and job postings, site visits, alumni panels, bus treks, on-campus interviews and more.

  • McNair Scholars Program

    The year-long program supports academically talented low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students toward pursuing advanced graduate degree through mentoring, simulated graduate school experiences and a 10-week summer research program.

     

    Qualifications: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident, completion of 60 college credits by May 31, minimum GPA of 2.75 (sophomore), 3.0 (junior), first-generation college student AND defined as low-income by the U.S. Dept. of Education, OR of a background underrepresented in graduate education.

  • National Fellowships Advising

    Fellowships help students and alumni develop as scholars and global citizens through study abroad, research, service, internships or graduate study. There are scholarship and fellowship opportunities for every major and career goal. UD provides information, advice and application support to highly motivated students applying for national and international fellowships and scholarships.

  • Plastino Scholars Program

    Funding for undergraduates pursuing self-designed, off-campus learning experiences that create a difference in their lives and the lives of others.


    Eligibility: Undergraduate students who, at the time of application, are enrolled for at least 12 semester hours and have completed five semesters at most

    Grant Amount: Up to $6,000

  • Research Apprenticeship Work-Study

    A collaboration between the Undergraduate Research Program (URP), Student Financial Services and faculty mentors allows eligible, early-career students to use federal work-study funds to gain research experiences at the University of Delaware.


    Qualifications: Work-study eligible undergraduates
    Semester: Fall and spring
    Pay: $13.25/hour in fall 2024 and $15/hour in spring 2025

  • Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs)

    Research experiences with faculty mentors give talented undergraduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related majors a chance to see and take part in what is happening on the front lines of discovery.


    Qualifications: Varies by program

    Location: UD campus
    Pay: $4,500–$6,000 stipend

  • Study Abroad Financial Need-Based Awards

    Undergraduate students who submit a complete UD Study Abroad application will be automatically considered for financial need-based awards. 


    Eligibility: Undergraduate students
    Semester: Any
    Grant Amount: 50–75 percent of the study abroad program fee and may only be used towards the final balance of the program fee.

  • Summer Fellows Research Program

    The program is ideal for those who wish to undertake a smaller-scale research project, who have been working on projects during the academic year and would like to continue research in the summer, or who wish to begin projects that will continue during the next academic year.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates 
    Semester: Summer
    Location: UD campus
    Pay: $300–$1,500 stipend

  • Summer Scholars Research Program

    Conduct in-depth research or creative work with University faculty. Applicants must propose a research project of their own making. Students selected for the Summer Scholars Program work on their projects full-time for 10 weeks.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates
    Semester: Summer
    Location: UD campus
    Pay: $4,000 stipend

  • Summer Undergraduate Biden School Fellows

    Students conduct research with faculty and staff in one of the Biden School of Public Policy & Administration affiliated research centers—the Institute for Public Administration or the Center for Community Research and Service—on public policy issues such as community revitalization, economic development, education policy, health policy, housing and homelessness, land-use planning and more. The program runs for ten weeks for a total of 300 hours.

     

    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates with a minimum 3.0 GPA

    Semester: Summer

    Pay: Fellows take a required UAPP or UNIV course and receive a $4,500 fellowship

  • UD Antiracism Initiative (UDARI) Summer Scholars

    The program provides highly motivated undergraduates in any major with the opportunity to immerse themselves in research or a creative project based on race, antiracism or racial justice. Scholars spend 10 weeks during the summer pursuing their research or creative projects full-time.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates
    Semester: Summer
    Location: Delaware
    Pay: $4,000 stipend

  • UD Career Center Internship & Career Experience Grants

    Undergraduates who have accepted (or are working on obtaining) unpaid or underpaid internships, field experiences, job shadowing, research with organizations outside of UD or professional conferences where a financial barrier could impact their participation.

    The Internship and Career Experience grant program can supplement other grants if those awards only partially cover students’ expected expenses.

    Grant Amount: Up to $5,000

  • UD Legacy Student Academic Enrichment Awards

    Funding for undergraduate legacy students seeking to participate in opportunities outside of the traditional classroom where the student may otherwise be unable to participate. These opportunities may include, but are not limited to, academic competitions, research or program-related presentations, leadership conferences, research, internships, service-learning (such as UDaB) or other educational endeavors.


    Eligibility: A "legacy" student (i.e., a student with a verifiable parent or step-parent who is a UD graduate)
    Semester: Any
    Grant Amount: Up to $2,000

  • UD On-Campus Student Employment

    UD offers a variety of on campus-jobs that are based in service, research and academia with offices and departments across the University. Students are able to earn income, help to develop professional competencies and provide mentorship.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates
    Semester: Year-round
    Pay: Hourly pay set by UD office hiring student

  • UD Study Abroad

    Choose from semester-long programs in the fall and spring, and shorter programs during Winter and Summer Sessions. While abroad, you’ll take a full load of academic credits, choose to engage in internships or community service, and sharpen your language and intercultural skills. Undergraduate students who submit a complete UD Study Abroad application will be automatically considered for financial need-based awards to help finance your study abroad experience.

  • UD Water Resources Center (DWRC) Internship/Research Program

    DWRC internships provide a unique opportunity for undergraduate students, faculty and scientists to be directly involved in research and education that address the critical water resources issues of the day in Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic region. Students must establish a water research topic and project with the support of a faculty or scientist advisor.


    Qualifications: Open to all undergraduates with a minimum 3.0 GPA
    Semester: Fall and spring (combined)
    Pay: Up to $4,000
