Financial information for ELI Students

Whether you’re a current student or planning to join us, the following information will help you navigate the financial aspects of your studies with the English Language Institute at the University of Delaware. For Delaware residents, we also explain qualifications that could make you eligible for additional benefits. Payments and Refunds

The English Language Institute provides scholarships to several students each session.

Sample Letters of Sponsorship

A letter of sponsorship is required with each application for all ELI programs, unless the applicant will pay for his/her own studies. There are two types of sponsors: individual and organization.

Delaware resident qualifications

We offer significant discounts to Delaware residents for the Intensive English Program.

Many Delaware residents are eligible to receive substantial tuition discounts for ELI courses. To qualify, you must:

  • Be a permanent resident of the U.S. (green card holder) or a U.S. citizen; AND
  • Have been a permanent resident or U.S. citizen for at least one year; AND
  • Have lived in the state of Delaware for at least one year (i.e., the year prior to the start date of the program).

If you meet these criteria and can provide proof, then you may qualify for special pricing for Delaware residents.

 

Course fee waivers

Full-time UD faculty, professional and staff members, and visiting scholars who qualify for UD benefits (as well as their dependents) may use their Fee Waivers to participate in the Intensive English Program or the Evening Program. Currently, University of Delaware employees are only allowed two course fee waivers for the ELI in one lifetime.

Note: Fee waivers may only be used for up to two sessions of the Intensive English Program.

Procedure:

  1. Complete the application for our Intensive English Program
  2. Download and complete the paper Course Fee Waiver form. (You must use the paper form because the UD web form online will not work for ELI courses.)
  3. Submit the completed Request for Course Fee Waiver form to the Office of Human Resources by email, fax, or in person:

Program Prices

Prepares international students who are conditionally admitted as undergraduates at the University of Delaware.
Prepares students for undergraduate or graduate degree studies in the United States after completing their English as a Second Language studies.
Provides high-quality business English as a second language instruction for short-term international business professionals.
Intensive certificate program to train EFL teachers, supervisors, or teacher trainers in other countries.
Prepares international students who want to pursue a graduate (master’s or doctorate) degree but need to improve their English skills first.
Intensive, one-semester (4-month) program for international students who are conditionally admitted to a participating UD graduate program and who are approaching the language proficiency required for matriculation.
Develops students’ language and test-taking skills for the IELTS examination.
Prepares students for undergraduate or graduate studies at an American university, business professionals to learn English for career enhancement, and general language learners to improve their language skills.
Three-week summer program for international high school students to improve their English skills while learning about American culture..
Three-week summer program for high school students to improve their college readiness skills while learning about U.S. culture.
International students spend a semester taking university classes while enjoying weekend trips and events.
