Costs and funding
The Center for Global Programs & Services is committed to making study abroad accessible for all students. As you map out your finances, remember, we are here to help.
Studying abroad requires early and careful planning. As you explore programs, be sure to consider how your options will fit with your academic and personal goals - and your budget. We encourage you to include others in your decision-making, including your academic advisor and family members.
CGPS offers a variety of scholarship and funding opportunities to students. The following webpages explain a variety of opportunities to help UD students "go global."
Study Abroad Costs
The cost calculator on each study abroad program brochure will help you determine the full cost of your study abroad program.
All students are financially responsible for:
Study abroad program fee (billed to student account)
UD tuition for study abroad courses (based on residency, billed to student account)
UD course registration fee (billed to student account)
Airfare/travel costs and personal expenses (not billed to student account)
The Student Financial Services Study Abroad Cost & Aid Comparison Worksheet may be a helpful resource.
The Program Fee listed on the brochure page will explain what the program fee does and does not include. The program fee typically includes the cost of housing, international health insurance. Program fees may include additional items such as cultural excursions and some meals. Program fees do not include tuition, airfare to/from the program site or ground transportation to/from the U.S. departure airport.
Program Fees are estimates. While fees are typically confirmed during the term prior to departure, they are subject to change until the program start date. Final Program Fees may increase due to unforeseen local cost increases, fluctuations in exchange rates, or changes in the group size.
When and How Do I Pay?
Upon acceptance to a UD study abroad program, you will have three business days to formally commit to your program. At the time of commitment, you will agree to pay all costs associated with participation, which include the related Program Fee, Tuition, and other Billable Fees (i.e. course registration, differential fees). The full Billable Total will be posted to your account through UD Student Financial Services and all charges are due by the date given on the UD Billing Timeline.
Withdrawal Policy
Students who wish to withdraw from a program after the commitment deadline will be responsible for a $500 withdrawal penalty and all costs that have been spent or committed on their behalf. If a student withdraws from the program after commitment and has been awarded a CGPS scholarship, they will be required to repay their scholarship award in full.
CGPS Need-Based Awards
CGPS offers need-based awards to full-time matriculated UD undergraduate students during the study abroad planning process. It only takes a few clicks to apply for a need-based scholarship. The need-based award application is due BEFORE the study abroad program deadline. Students will receive award decisions approximately two weeks after the scholarship program deadline. The CGPS Scholarship Program brochure page outlines all upcoming deadlines.
Receipt of a study abroad scholarship does not guarantee acceptance into a study abroad program.
Students who are Delaware Diplomats may receive both a Delaware Diplomats award and a CGPS financial need-based award.
Eligibility
Full-time, matriculated UD undergraduate students applying to UD short-term or semester long study abroad programs are eligible. Students must have:
A current FAFSA on file with Student Financial Services
A high level of financial need (as determined by Student Financial Services)
A UD GPA
Students participating in UD Exchange Programs or who have previously received a CGPS financial need-based award are ineligible.
