Dear
students of MUSC101, distance-learning.
The message below is to help you get started with MUSIC101 for
pre-enrolled and late-enrolled students.
Enrollment
and access to Canvas
- If
you are pre-enrolled, you should be able to access the materials on
Canvas by the first day of classes, if not a few days before.
- If
you enroll on the first day of classes or later, you may have to wait
up to 2 days before you can access the materials on Canvas, but keep
checking every so often during that time to see whether your access is
activated.
- If
you are enrolled in this course after already having taken it before at
UD and received a final grade, understand that a lower grade will not
be replaced by a higher grade. Both grades will average into
your GPA, and credit for the course is counted only once (if it is a
passing grade, of course).
- Related to
retaking MUSC101, if your first attempt was in section 194/195 (online sections) and your
grade was not satisfactory, and if you are a local student, you might
consider retaking the course in the classroom rather than online.
- You will
have to do all the required coursework if you are re-enrolled to get a
grade (as opposed to auditing).
- In any
case, you should consult with your advisor before continuing a "retake"
enrollment.
My
primary purpose in writing this message is to make sure you know what
materials you have to purchase for the course and to give you access to
at least some of the online course web-pages while you are waiting to
get onto Canvas.
Materials to purchase:
Our textbook is the 13th edition of The Enjoyment of
Music from W.W. Norton and includes digital resources at the publisher's website, especially audio recordings. Go to the policies/syllabus page to get
information about the Norton materials that you need for this
course. If you
prefer physical copies of the textbook rather than the online edition,
be sure to
check ahead of time with the place from which you purchase the
materials as to their return policy.
Online materials to get you
started:
The
rest of the materials for the course are on Canvas or linked from there.
So
that you can at least see some of the online materials for the course
while waiting for access to Canvas, go to these web-pages:
- welcome.html
-- the course "welcome" message
- syllabus.html
-- the syllabus and policies for the course (calendar at the end)
- musc101.html
-- the is the course homepage, with a the list of the most important online links and a concise list of the quiz-assignments
- Readings1.html
-- the first set of readings (as applied to Exam 1)
- ListList1.html
-- the first list of musical piecesthat you are supposed to listen to online at W.W. Norton
- Exam1.html
-- the page that helps to explain Exam 1; the general information here
applies to all three exams
(Please
note that I may need to tweak one or more of these pages a bit before
the first day of classes. In general, be sure to note the dates in the
calendar at the bottom of the syllabus on that day to see whether any
of them have changed and note them all down in your schedule for the
academic term.) Most
of the links within the above 6 html-files will not work, because you need
to be in Canvas; but you should be able to get enough of an idea of
things to get started.
Once
you get access to Norton materials and have read the above web pages,
please begin the readings and the listening.
If
you have any questions, please let me know.
Again,
welcome to the course!
lkn
