Steam system shutdown May 27-June 5
April 21, 2025
Plan for disruptions to steam, hot water, heating
Each June, UD Facilities performs a steam system shutdown to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the system and its major components, such as the main boilers housed in the Central Utility Plant (CUP) and manholes around the Newark campus.
The central campus shut down, which supplies steam service to over 80 buildings, will begin at noon, Tuesday, May 27, and end at 5 p.m., Thursday, June 5. It will be followed by a shutdown of the south campus utility plant at Worrilow Hall.
This outage is scheduled after Commencement and before Alumni Weekend to minimize disruption to the campus community:
- Tuesday, May 27 – The CUP shutdown and system cool-down will commence. Manholes will be opened, and condensate drained.
- Wednesday, May 28, through Thursday, June 5 – Major work activities in the central plant will begin, including main boiler inspections. Manhole work will continue, as will repairs to the steam district.
- Thursday, June 6 – Restoration of the steam service to all designated buildings throughout the day.
Members of the community are urged to exercise caution around any safety barriers and never cross over or walk through safety barriers during the outage period. These barriers are installed for your protection. The outage has an expected completion date of June 5.
During the outage, there will be no steam available for cooking or sterilization, no hot water (though Laurel Hall will be accommodated), and no heat for the 80 buildings. Occupants in these buildings may experience variations in temperature due to the ambient conditions each day and the individual building air conditioning systems.
For a comprehensive list of affected buildings and more specific information, see the Facilities Outage Notification (FNS), available at http://web.facilities.udel.edu/OutageNotification/External/ExtReport.aspx.
