Fueling innovation: IT-ATS backs creative teaching
April 16, 2025
Apply by May 1 for the Rickards Grant — a $5K opportunity to experiment and reimagine your teaching
The Paul J. Rickards Jr. Teaching Innovation Grant is now accepting proposals for the 2025–2026 cycle. Offered by UDIT Academic Technology Services (IT-ATS), the grant provides up to $5,000 and hands-on support to help faculty pilot bold, student-centered ideas.
“I love that ATS offers this grant,” said Sheldon Hewlett, associate professor of materials science and engineering. “It gives us the chance to experiment — and the support to make it possible.”
These projects reimagine how students engage with course content — using creativity, technology and real-world connections to deepen learning.
Past recipients from across disciplines have explored a wide range of ideas, including:
- Data literacy through the lens of Taylor Swift’s economic impact
- CNC technology paired with traditional letterpress printing
- Lab skills reinforced through a puzzle-based escape room
- Blending pop culture, classic literature, and AI in a course on authorship and analysis
In addition to funding, grantees receive customized support in instructional design, video production, educational technology and project management.
“I probably wouldn’t have done this without the grant,” Hewlett added. “ATS helped me think through how to make it work.”
Applications are welcome from all disciplines. Whether you’re using new tools or rethinking how students interact with your subject, the Rickards Grant can help bring your vision to life.
Apply by May 1, 2025. To submit a proposal, or to see the full list of previous awardees and their projects, visit ats.udel.edu/grant.
