UD Cooperative Extension class teaches practical food preservation skills

Canning is an important, safe method of food preservation that can save a garden’s bounty. Offered through University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, Canning 101 reviews the basic steps in two methods of canning—the boiling water bath and the pressure canner.

Participants learn the practical skills of canning and connect with a community focused on sustainable practices and healthy eating, as well as gain the knowledge and confidence to preserve food, thereby contributing to food security and minimizing waste. This initiative equips individuals with the tools needed to make informed choices about their food sources. Together, a healthier community fosters and promotes a culture of sustainability.

The class is offered in Newark and Dover.

Upcoming Newark sessions are Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, and Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6-8 p.m., at the New Castle County Cooperative Extension Office, 461 Wyoming Rd, Newark, DE 19716.

The upcoming Dover session is Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 1-3 p.m., at the Paradee Center, 69 Transportation Circle, Dover, DE 19901.

A Sussex County class will be scheduled in the future.

All participants must register in advance; registration closes five days before the event. Please contact Diane Oliver at doliver@udel.edu with any questions.
