Indigenous Delaware

Connecting the UD community with current Native-led initiatives

On Thursday, Oct. 10, UD will host "Indigenous Delaware, Nanticoke Land Stewardship and Language Revitalization." This public event highlights important local Indigenous initiatives and will include presentations by Nanticoke members Courtney Streett, co-founder of Native Roots Farm Foundation, and Karelle Hall, a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology at Rutgers. They will describe their work on Nanticoke land stewardship and language revitalization. Activities will begin at 5 p.m. at 15 Innovation Way in Newark.

The event is co-organized by the UD Anti-Racism Initiative’s American Indian and Indigenous Relations Committee (AIIR) and the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN). The AIIR Committee is dedicated to fostering and maintaining positive relations between the University and Indigenous communities on both a local and global scale. Pascha Bueno-Hansen, chair of the AIIR committee, said she hopes “people will gain new perspectives on the ecosystems that sustain their lives, and support Indigenous land stewardship and language revitalization initiatives.”

Sam Clem, DENIN’s assistant director of diversity education and outreach, said: “Too often we stay in our disciplinary silos. This event will ask us to break those down a bit and consider connections between people, language and environment across Delaware.”

The organizers extend a special thanks to their cosponsors: UD Department of Anthropology, UD Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural Activities and Public Events (CAPE), UD Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences, UD Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering and UD Department of English.
