Community remembers longtime nurse in Student Health Services

Virginia “Ginny” Ruth (Anderson) Johnson, who worked as a nurse in the University of Delaware’s Student Health Services for 24 years,  passed away in the early hours of Oct. 13, 2024, surrounded by her family who had gathered from near and far for her 97th birthday a day earlier.

Ms. Johnson joined Student Health Servics as a nurse in 1974 and worked there until her retirement in 1998.

The University was a huge part of her life, her family said. While at UD, she took courses that allowed her to finally finish her BSN degree in her 50s. She also met Mary Zagar, a sports medicine nurse at UD for nearly 40 years, who became a close friend and with whom she organized many nursing conferences and helped with student-athlete physicals. She loved working with the students and always said they kept her young. Dedicated to nursing and her care of the students, she was committed to help anyone in need.

One particular story is told of a heavy snowstorm during Ms. Johnson’s overnight shift. The University canceled classses, and staff was having trouble getting in. She stayed for the day shift and even volunteered to help after that, if needed. Fortunately other staff had arrived. Later that same evening, Dr. Joe Sebold, then director of Student Health Services, drove by the Methodist Church on Main Street and spied Ginny, standing in the snow and enthusiastically ringing a bell for donations. He shook his head and thought, “Only Ginny. Who else but Ginny?”

Ms. Johnson also was one of the Blue Hens’ biggest fans. She went to countless home and away football and basketball games, with Ms. Zagar and others.

She was also an active member of the Newark United Methodist Church for many years, sang in the choir and volunteered for Altar Guild. She then started helping in the church library and the "Recent Reads" book group. She loved music and was a long-time member and then board president for the Newark Symphony Society for several years.

A celebration of Ms. Johnson’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, at R.T. Foard and Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St. in Newark, Friends may call beginning at noon for visitation.
