A UD alumnus, Mr. Campbell became the primary sports photographer for the University of Delaware in 2007. He captured the intensity, excitement and joy of Blue Hen sports with memorable images of all 21 varsity sports.

“Mark’s unmistakable talent as a photographer was matched by his generosity to—and love for—UD Athletics,” said Chrissi Rawak, director of athletics, community and campus recreation. “Mark caught the energy and vibrancy of the Blue Hen spirit and shared his art with fans everywhere. He will be greatly missed.”

In a 2017 feature published on BlueHens.com, Mr. Campbell reflected on his time documenting Delaware Athletics.

“There's nothing like shooting a big-time football game, with 20,000 people in the stands,” he  said. “But if I have to pick certain moments that are really special, it's hard to beat the women's basketball game against North Carolina in 2013. Before the doors even opened to the Bob Carpenter Center an hour or two before tipoff, there was a packed crowd outside. It was amazing.”

In addition to chronicling the achievements of Blue Hen athletes, Mr. Campbell was a generous supporter of UD Athletics, contributing to multiple projects and endowing a scholarship in his name.

“I have a real affection for UD and am interested in helping as much as I can,” Mr. Campbell said. “I have a softness in my heart for these student-athletes because I know how much they work. I don't think the general student population understands how hard it is to be a student-athlete because their season doesn't end. It's year-round. Oh, and by the way, you've got to juggle a 15-credit semester.”

His family noted those times covering UD sports were some of the happiest years of his life. Mr. Campbell stepped down in 2023.

UD Athletics marked Mr. Campbell’s passing with a moment of silence before the Homecoming football game on Oct. 26.
