A campus message from UD President Dennis Assanis
Editor's Note: The message below was emailed to UD faculty, staff and students at 10 a.m. on November 4, 2024.
Dear UD Community,
Voting is perhaps our most fundamental right in American democracy, a manifestation of the ideal that we, the people, can govern ourselves through our elected leaders. Tomorrow is Election Day, and I encourage all eligible voters to exercise this right. At the University of Delaware, classes are suspended, and offices are closed on Tuesday to allow our community to participate.
This election season, I continue to be inspired by the high level of civic engagement across our UD Community. Many of you have devoted hours beyond class or work to volunteer, canvass, fundraise, educate, or campaign in support of your local communities, or chosen candidates. This commitment is a powerful example of how each of us can impact and shape our community and country. I am grateful for the many opportunities I’ve had to hear from visitors and members of our community whose ideological views reflect a multitude of perspectives across the political spectrum. What has resonated with me is that, despite differing views, there is a shared desire to create positive change and find common ground.
I recognize this can also be a time of heightened emotions and stress for many. If you or other members of our community are experiencing increased stress about the election, please take advantage of the safety and wellness resources available to our community. No matter what the outcome of the election may be, I want to reassure you that all of us at UD will remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering a community of respect and belonging.
Sincerely,
Dennis Assanis, President
