Winter break closing preparations

Ensure a safe end to the year

In preparation for the upcoming holiday break, which begins on Dec. 20 and ends in January, FREAS asks everyone to take a few important steps to help save energy, avoid frozen pipes and ensure a smooth and secure year-end closing.

  1. Thermostat: Set any thermostat to 60°F to conserve energy during the break.
  2. Windows: Please double-check and close all windows in offices and workspaces.
  3. Holiday decorations: Unplug all holiday decorations and any nonessential electronic devices, such as coffee makers.
  4. Trash and recycling: Be sure to empty office trash and recycling before the break begins.

As a friendly reminder, don’t forget to set up out-of-office email responses and update voicemail greetings to reflect the closure dates.

While you are enjoying the break and holiday season, FREAS encourages you to save energy and money by implementing a few practical tips at home.

  • Use low-energy decorations like reusable wreaths, garlands and LED lights to save energy dollars.
  • Add light timers to all your holiday lights and inflatable displays. Light timers are inexpensive, last many years and save power when no one enjoys your displays.
  • Install programable or smart thermostats at home and turn down the temperature after bed or when you are away. By programming the temperature to increase before you get up or get home, you can save energy and enjoy a warm home.

If you need facilities repairs, needs or requests, please feel free to contact the maintenance call center at 302-831-1141. If you need access to any buildings or have any questions, please call 911.

FREAS staff members thank you for your help keeping UD safe and sustainable, and they wish you a joyful and restful holiday break.
