UD welcomes new students with inspirational candlelight ceremony

After an exciting opening weekend at the University of Delaware, first-year student Ngatha Maina settled on The Green on Monday evening, ready for whatever lies ahead.

“I’ve had so much fun making new friends and exploring the campus with my best friend, who is also going to school here,” said Maina, of Newark, Delaware. “I’m looking forward to getting to know myself better this year.”

That journey began alongside more than 4,100 other new Blue Hens at the annual Twilight Induction Ceremony, a campus tradition that welcomes new students and kicks off their first semester at UD. The ceremony is the culmination of Welcome Days, several days of activities and opportunities for new students to learn about the campus and meet their classmates.

“This ceremony symbolizes so much,” said Neh Dinga, of Seaford, Delaware. “Everyone here is starting a new chapter—something new in all of our lives. It’s really exciting to all be together.”

UD President Dennis Assanis welcomed the students on The Green, as well as those who are studying abroad this semester and others watching online.

“Take a minute to look around at one another and reflect on the significance of this moment,” Assanis said. “You are here with your entire cohort, together in the same place, experiencing this important milestone. Each of you plays a vital role in creating the vibrant community we cherish.”

Assanis stressed the importance of such moments of togetherness and building a community. “This is the time to come from a place of respect and connectedness,” he said. “When you start there and look for moments like we are experiencing now, where we feel a common thread with each other, that becomes much easier.”

Provost Laura Carlson encouraged students to bring the spirit of connection into their relationships with professors and into their communities. “You should think of your educational experience at UD as a partnership,” she said. “Take this opportunity to get an excellent education and to develop the skills, knowledge and connections you need to help improve the lives of others and build the kind of world we all want to live in.”

The new students also heard from Isabella Haigney, a senior and interim president of UD’s Student Government Association, who shared her journey at UD.

“Differences with my peers is what has made my journey at UD so powerful,” Haigney said. “If you’re sitting here right now — scared of the unknown, fearful you might not be accepted, or worried you might not find your way — let me tell you that UD has a path for you, and you will find your way.”

Haigney also urged students to step out of their comfort zones to grow academically and personally. “Think about the you that you want to become, bigger than you are now,” she said. “Stay true to you; just imagine a stronger version.”

José-Luis Riera, UD vice president for student life, spoke to the students about his personal transformation through education, and how his own journey now drives his dedication to designing experiences for students to learn and grow.

“As the candles are lit tonight, I encourage you to think about how you’ll live the essential values of the community you’re entering — values you’ve just heard our University leaders invoke,” Riera said. “I encourage you to think about what being a Blue Hen means to you.”

I’m also excited for the opportunity to be more independent and experience college life.”

“I’ve met a lot of people in my major, and I signed up for some clubs at the Involvement Fair today,” Tillman said. “I’m excited to be here with the entire class tonight, and I’m ready to listen and learn.”
