NPR’s Leila Fadel and UD’s Ralph Begleiter examine state of global journalism
Leila Fadel, host of National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, and Begleiter, former CNN World Affairs correspondent and founding director of UD’s Center for Political Communication, will discuss the importance of free and independent journalism and the role of social media in a special event to mark World Press Freedom Day. Presented by UD’s Journalism program and Delaware Public Media, Byline: An Evening with Leila Fadel and Ralph Begleiter will be held Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in the Rodney Room, Perkins Student Center.
Fadel is a national and international correspondent, winning numerous awards for her work. She has consistently reported on the fault lines of our nation, including on policing and race, on American Muslim communities and the jarring inequities the coronavirus exposed in the healthcare system. Overseas, she covers the Middle East, producing stories on the rise of extremism, the return of authoritarianism, and the aftermath of a wave of uprisings in 2011.
Begleiter spent two decades with CNN, earning the distinction of being the network’s most widely traveled correspondent. The UD Rosenberg Professor of Communication Emeritus, he founded the Center for Political Communication in 2010, creating distinguished programs such as Global Agenda and National Agenda.
The annual Byline event is supported by the E. A. Nickerson lecture fund, which is designed to bring prominent journalists to campus to share their experiences with UD students.
