In Memoriam: Praise Ezechibueze

Campus community remembers medical diagnostics student dedicated to serving others

Praise Nnamdi Ezechibueze, a third year student studying medical diagnostics in the University of Delaware’s College of Health Sciences, passed away May 6, 2023. He was 21.

In a message to the campus, President Dennis Assanis said, “On behalf of the University of Delaware community, I want to express our heartfelt sympathy to Praise’s family and friends. At such difficult times, it is essential that we comfort and support one another.”

“Our deepest condolences go to Praise’s family, friends and colleagues here on our campus,” said Adam Cantley, dean of students and assistant vice president for student support and advocacy. “The tragic loss of this young man whose future was focused on helping others saddens us all, and he will be missed.”

In addition to his academics, Mr. Ezechibueze participated in several intramural sports through Campus Recreation. He was also a member of the club volleyball team at UD. Many of his friends recalled that he could often be found at the Little Bob supporting them and offering workout tips.

Ian Shaner, a senior political science major at UD, paid tribute to Mr. Ezechibueze with these words: “In life losses are inevitable and there is no rhyme or reason as to why these things happen. With loss comes regret, guilt, self-doubt, grief, pain and so many more negative emotions. But with loss also comes experience, knowledge, hope, light, a sense of perspective, along with a platform to create new and meaningful bonds with those around you. Fly high brother; love you forever.”

Faculty members in the College of Health Sciences shared reminiscences.

Kimberly Walker, director of the Medical Diagnostics Program, called him “a solid student,” and Leslie Allshouse, senior instructor in medical and molecular sciences, said that in a reflection-based assignment in one of her courses, Mr. Ezechibueze indicated he was “hoping to go to medical school or get a Ph.D. after finishing his undergraduate degree. Praise wrote that he wanted to help people but was also hoping to stay close to home and his family.”

Esther Biwas-Fiss, professor and chair of the Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences, said, “As a department, Medical and Molecular Sciences was deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Praise. Praise’s dedication to pursuing the medical profession led him to select the challenging major in medical diagnostics, which rigorously prepares students for success in healthcare.”

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Mr. Ezechibueze was a graduate of Edison High School in Edison, New Jersey.

He is survived by his parents, Edwin and Patience Ezechibueze, and his brothers, Dominion, Light and Prince Justin.

Condolences may be left online at Boylan Funeral Home.
