UD Police investigating dating violence incident
The University of Delaware Police Department (UDPD) is investigating an incident of dating violence that occurred this week on campus.
On Monday, July 10, UDPD responded to the Ray Street Complex regarding a report of an individual who was injured as a result of dating violence. Upon arrival, UDPD found two UD undergraduate students — a 23-year-old man, Joshua McCary, and a woman — who had suffered injuries. The woman was treated at a local hospital for her injuries and released.
Based upon physical evidence and facts available at the scene, both individuals were initially charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. The continued investigation by UDPD rendered forensic evidence that led to dismissal of the charge against the woman and expanded charges for McCary.
On Wednesday, July 12, after UDPD had presented all available evidence to the Delaware Attorney General’s office, McCary was charged with strangulation — a Class D felony — as well as misdemeanors of unlawful imprisonment, aggravated menacing, and third-degree assault. He has since been arrested and has been committed to Howard Young Correctional Institution in default of bond.
McCary has been separated from the University and barred from the UD campus.
