The University of Delaware campus is always open and makes for a great walk, no matter the weather. However, after the semester ends and the winter break begins, offices and other facilities might be closed or have limited hours.

Winter break schedules

As the UD semester nears end, the days and hours of operations shift for student health, library, bookstore, transportation and more

Winter break for students will begin after the conclusion of final examinations on Sunday, Dec. 17. On that day, dinner will be the last meal provided by UD Dining Services and residence halls will close at 10 p.m.

With limited exceptions, University offices will be closed Saturday, Dec. 23, and will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 2. UD facilities will move to an adjusted schedule, outlined below.

For students attending Winter Session, residence halls will reopen for check-in from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, and dinner that night is the first meal scheduled to be served in UD dining halls. Winter Session classes will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

UD Student Health and Wellbeing (Warner Hall and Laurel Hall)

Student Wellness and Health Promotion, the Center for Counseling and Student Development and Student Health Services share the following holiday hours. Visit the Student Health and Wellbeing website for more detailed information. 

  • Monday, Dec. 18, to Thursday, Dec. 21: Open to see students from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Friday, Dec. 22, to Monday, Jan. 1: All units and buildings are closed. 

The following services operate 24 hours a day, all year long, even when the University is closed. The following are available to students at no cost.

Dining Services

The last meal of the fall 2023 semester, served at Pencader and Caesar Rodney Dining Halls, will be dinner on Sunday, Dec. 17, until 7 p.m. (The Russell dining location will be closed starting Dec 15.) All locations will be closed from Monday, Dec. 18 through Monday, Jan. 1. The first meal of UD’s Winter Session will be dinner served from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Caesar Rodney Fresh Food Company. University Student Centers (Perkins and Trabant)

  • Thursday, Dec. 14, and Friday, Dec. 15: 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. 

  • Saturday, Dec. 16, and Sunday, Dec. 17: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Monday, Dec. 18, to Friday, Dec. 22: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Saturday, Dec. 23, to Monday, Jan. 1, 2024: Closed

(Esports and Hen Zone are closed from Saturday, Dec. 16, through Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.)

Development and Alumni Relations

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations, which can be reached at 302-831-4333, will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, and Friday, Dec. 29. With the end of the year rapidly approaching, donors can help grow and expand the opportunities for current and future students by making a gift to support UD’s people, programs and places. Every donor and every gift makes a profound impact on the University community.

Checks and envelopes must be dated/postmarked no later than Saturday, Dec. 31, for the contribution to process in calendar year 2023. All UD departments and units should frequently check mail for contributions and follow the standard process for providing the year-end gifts to the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

Library, Museums and Press

Morris Library will be open Monday, Dec. 18, through Friday, Dec. 22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. While Morris Library, the branch libraries and the gallery spaces will be closed Saturday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Jan. 1, many online resources are accessible 24/7 at library.udel.edu. For the most up-to-date hours, visit library.udel.edu/hours.

Transportation Services Holiday Bus Schedule

UD bus service will operate normally through Friday, Dec. 15. “Finals buses” will run Saturday, Dec. 16, and Sunday, Dec. 17, from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. From Monday, Dec. 18, through Friday, Dec. 22, UD buses will operate according to the limited holiday schedule. There will be no University bus service from Saturday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Jan. 1. Winter Session buses will begin on Tuesday, January 2.

Parking Services

For the week of final exams (Dec. 13-17), Parking Services will not charge for parking in Lot 41, the Visitors Center lot on South College Avenue, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. only. Anyone parking in Lot 41 outside those hours must pay using the kiosks or through the app. From Monday, Dec. 18, through Friday, Dec. 22, while classes are not in session and exams are not being held, students with Red or Resident permits may park in Gray lots. From Dec. 24, 2023 through Jan. 1, 2024, weekend parking rules will be in effect during the holiday break when the University is closed. Normal parking regulations resume on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.

Winter Session parking permits will be available for sale online beginning Jan. 1, and spring semester permits will be available online beginning Feb. 1.

Barnes and Noble University of Delaware Bookstore

The Barnes and Noble University of Delaware Bookstore, 83 East Main St., has announced its hours for the remainder of 2023 and early 2024.

Bookstore hours will be:

  • Monday, Dec. 18, to Saturday, Dec. 23, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Sunday, Dec. 24, and Monday, Dec. 25, closed

  • Tuesday, Dec. 26, to Saturday, Dec. 30, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Sunday, Dec. 31, and Monday, Jan. 1, closed

Regular Winter Session hours start Tuesday, Jan. 2, and end Saturday, Feb. 3. Winter Session hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Sundays.

Little Bob Recreation

The Carpenter Sports Building (Little Bob) hours for the end of the semester and winter break will be as follows:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 12, to Friday, Dec. 15: Closing at 9 p.m.

  • Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 16-17: Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Monday, Dec. 18, to Thursday, Dec. 21: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Friday, Dec. 22: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Saturday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Jan. 1: Closed

  • Tuesday, Jan. 2: Winter hours begin

Fred Rust Ice Arena

Public skating is available during winter, including the academic break at UD’s Fred Rust Ice Arena. Please visit the website for information about scheduling birthday party tables and renting skates.

Delaware Athletics

The University of Delaware men’s and women’s basketball teams have upcoming home games at the Bob Carpenter Center. 

Delaware Faculty and Staff can reserve up to 2 free tickets to the upcoming Men’s and Women’s Basketball games this winter session. Join the Blue Hens on Thursday, January 4, at 7 p.m. when the Men’s team hosts Hampton and on Sunday, January 7, at 2 p.m. when the Women’s team hosts Hampton. University Printing

University Printing is open through Dec. 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will close at noon on Dec. 22 for the holiday break. The facility will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, with regular hours (Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The email address — universityprinting@udel.edu  — will be monitored continuously during the holiday break if there are any pressing questions or concerns. UDairy Creamery

The flagship location is open through Dec. 22 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., will close from Dec. 23 through Jan. 4, and reopens Jan. 5 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. UDairy Creamery Café is open Dec. 18 through Dec. 21 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Café will close from Dec. 23 through Jan. 4 and then reopens on Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
