UD’s Isaí Jess Muñoz illuminates rich traditions of Catalonian music
Editor’s note: This article appears in the new, all-digital issue of the University of Delaware Research magazine. This issue spotlights the importance of effective communication in our lives and tips for ensuring a healthy information diet. It also covers ways faculty and students are exploring new worlds through research — including volcanoes.
Isaí Jess Muñoz was an associate professor of voice and opera in the University of Delaware’s School of Music. His latest recording Visca L’Amor, which means long live love, is an homage to the music of Catalonia, an area of Spain that suffered great oppression during the social and political upheaval of the Spanish Civil War and the Francisco Franco dictatorship.
In the Q&A in the magazine, Muñoz talked about what happens when communication gets blocked and how composers and musicians of the time documented this censorship of the region’s language through song. The album is a collaboration with Oksana Glouchko, UD pianist and chamber music coach, and an effort to preserve Catalonian cultural musical heritage.
