Research forum in material culture studies to feature lecture by environmental scholar

The Center for Material Culture Studies will host a virtual lecture as part of Thing Tank, an annual research forum, at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 23.

The talk, “Ecomaterialism and its Discontents: Political Subjects and Immersed Speculation,” is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

In the talk, Stacy Alaimo, a professor of English and core faculty member in environmental studies at the University of Oregon, will lead an engaging discussion on the scopes, methods and directions of environmentally oriented new materialism. She will examine such questions as: What would it mean to think and act as an eco-materialist?

Alaimo is the author of several books, including Undomesticated Ground: Recasting Nature as Feminist Space; Material Feminisms, co-edited with Susan J. Hekman; Bodily Natures: Science, Environment and the Material Self; and Exposed: Environmental Politics and Pleasures in Posthuman Times. She is currently writing a book titled Deep Blue Ecologies: Science, Aesthetics and the Creatures of the Abyss and co-editing a book series at Duke University Press called “Elements.”

The Center for Material Culture Studies at UD helps integrate and enhance the University’s rich resources for the creation, study and conservation of material culture. Thing Tank, an innovative, interdisciplinary hub of faculty and students from across the College of Arts and Sciences, previously hosted a lecture by renowned Indigenous artist Rose B. Simpson.

Funding for the Feb. 23 event has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and Delaware Humanities as part of the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. Additional support has been provided by UD’s Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural Activities and Public Events.
