Newark Police arrest student

Man charged after threatening pedestrians with a gun

Newark Police have arrested a 20-year-old University of Delaware student after an investigation about two incidents involving a man threatening individuals with a firearm on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 3.

Just before 8 p.m., Oct. 3, Newark Police received a report from two victims that they had been walking on Academy Street, south of East Delaware Avenue, when they were followed by a vehicle. It pulled up next to them, and the driver pointed a firearm at the victims, threatening to shoot them. They fled the area and called Newark Police.

Shortly after that report, the University of Delaware Police Department was contacted by a male victim who said he was walking through the parking lot of Drake Hall on Academy Street when he was shot with what he believed to be a BB gun. He described the vehicle and suspect, both of which matched the details of the prior incident. The victim suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene by EMS and did not require further medical treatment.

Based on video surveillance and witness statements, Newark Police identified the suspect as Quinn Annable, a sophomore from Newark, Delaware. On Oct. 6, Newark Police took him into custody without incident at his off-campus apartment in Newark and charged him with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and two counts of aggravated menacing. He was also charged by UD Police with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and second degree assault.

Annable appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $20,000 cash bail. Annable was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, Delaware. In addition to criminal charges, all UD students charged with crimes are immediately referred to the University’s Office of Student Conduct to face potential administrative sanctions.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Detective T. Gerasimov at 302-366-7100, ext. 3474 or tgerasimov@newark.de.us. Additional methods for providing information to Newark Police can be found on the department’s tips page, where reward information may also be available.
