Remote activities continue as originally scheduled

In response to a National Weather Service prediction of a major snow storm in the region on Thursday, Feb. 18, the University of Delaware will not hold in-person classes on the Newark campus Thursday. Students should wait to hear from their professors whether these classes will pivot to virtual format.

All online classes and other virtual University activities will continue as originally scheduled.

Essential personnel should report to work at their regularly scheduled time, unless otherwise authorized. UD Facilities staff will be working to clear campus parking lots and treat sidewalks.

Other UD locations in the state will make their own decisions about closing or late opening depending on their local conditions.

Schedule changes

  • COVID-19 testing scheduled on Feb. 18 at the Harker ISE Lab and Clayton Hall will be canceled. Students and staff with reservations for Feb. 18 may come for testing on Monday or Tuesday, Feb. 22-23. If students are referred to the Office of Student Conduct for missing a test, they can provide the office with their Thursday reservation confirmation to avoid conduct charges.
  • Student Health Services will be closed Feb. 18. Students with symptoms should isolate in place; if symptoms are worrisome and immediate medical attention is needed, they should call 911 or use local urgent care centers. The Nurse Advice hotline will be available to students at 800-681-3957.
  • The Carpenter Sports Building, Trabant University Center and Perkins Student Center will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Feb. 18.
  • The Student Life Drop-In Hub in the Perkins Student Center will be canceled Feb. 18. Students can connect with udel.edu/studentlife to connect with services and resources. The drop-in hub will be available in Perkins on Monday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m.
  • The Morris Library will be closed Feb. 18. Virtual services will continue as previously scheduled.
  • The two residential dining locations -- Caesar Rodney Fresh Food Company and Pencader Dining Hall -- will open for Express To Go only for breakfast and then normal hours for both Dine-in and Express To Go for lunch and dinner. Both the Laird and Harrington P.O.D. Markets will be open. The Trabant Food Court, Dunkin' in Perkins Student Center and The Nest's Marketplace wil be closed Feb. 18.
  • The Barnes and Noble UD Bookstore will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Feb. 18.
  • The city of Newark has declared a snow emergency that goes into effect at 10 p.m., Feb. 17. Vehicles must be removed from on-street parking spaces along the Snow Emergency Route by midnight; any vehicles along the emergency route after that time will be towed. For more information, visit the city's Snow Central page

Additional specific schedule changes will be posted on UDaily.

Personal safety

Safety is UD's highest priority. Faculty, staff and students should not put themselves at risk, and employees who expect difficulty traveling should contact their supervisors.

The University's policy is reprinted below:

Faculty and students are not expected to take unnecessary risks to meet their teaching and learning obligations due to inclement weather. When classes have not been canceled, it is a matter of personal judgment whether traveling to campus is hazardous. Faculty should notify their departmental offices when weather precludes them from meeting their teaching obligations; similarly, students should notify their professors when inclement weather precludes them from class attendance. In such cases, students should be allowed to make up missed class time and, whenever possible, canceled classes should be rescheduled.
