In Memoriam: Jack DuBois

Campus community remembers senior marketing major

Jack E. DuBois, a senior marketing major in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics at the University of Delaware, died on Nov. 22, 2021, at RWJBH Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, surrounded by his family. He was 21.

“On behalf of the entire University, I extend our deepest condolences to Jack’s family and the many members of our community who knew and loved him,” said Adam Cantley, dean of students. “We are all saddened by this loss.”

His degree will be awarded posthumously later this year.

Mark Bambach, marketing professor, said “Jack was in two of my classes and was an A student in both. He was very friendly and loved learning. He will surely be missed.”

Jack DuBois

Mr. DuBois was active in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity on campus, and his fraternity brothers created a GoFundMe page to assist the DuBois family and help ease their burden. On the site, Michael Newcomer, a senior in the Lerner College, shared a message on behalf of the brothers of the Delta Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi. “His passing has left so many feeling empty and lost,” Newcomer wrote. “He was such a consistent bright light in many people’s lives and left a lasting impression on everyone he came across.” Noting Mr. DuBois’ “infectious smile” and “extensive kindheartedness,” he said, “Simply put, Jack always made everyone feel loved and like they belonged. He was the most genuine person you could ever meet and always put others before himself.” As his friends come to terms with his loss, he concluded, “We are choosing now to live our lives exactly the way he lived his: By going through life with a high regard for generosity and selflessness.”

At UD, Mr. DuBois also was in the Blue Hen Marketing Club, the Table Tennis Club and played intramural basketball.

On his LinkedIn page, Mr. DuBois wrote, “Having previous experiences in hospitality and social services, I have learned to effectively communicate with others around me, work collaboratively with a team, lead by example, and manage my time and responsibilities effectively. I am hard-working, determined and always driven to succeed in whichever task I face.”

In the summer of 2021, he was a marketing education intern at Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies, and from 2014-20, he worked as a security guard at the Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club during summers.

In 2018, he graduated from Shore Regional High School, where he was in the National Honor Society and was captain of the basketball team. From 2012-18, he was a peer mentor with Special Olympics.

According to his obituary, he loved spending time with family and friends and was a lifelong fan of the Indianapolis Colts and New York Yankees. He grew up playing a number of sports, including basketball and baseball, and was a founding member of the Backyard Football League, a three-man league played in the backyard of his home with his two brothers.
