First Year Seminar seeking peer mentors

Applications open Sept. 20 for Fall 2020 Peer Mentor program

The University of Delaware First Year Seminar Program is seeking Peer Mentors for fall semester of 2020. Applications will open Friday, Sept. 20, 2019.

Peer Mentors are upper-class students who serve as resources and role models for first-year students. In order to serve as FYS Peer Mentors, students must have cumulative grade point averages of at least 2.8 and must be involved in several organizations around campus.

These students serve as student liaisons for new first-year students, build a sense of academic community among a small group of first-year students, and serve as resources for first-year students with questions or concerns.

All Peer Mentors are required to take a one-credit, pass/fail class (UNIV301) that meets Tuesdays 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., or Wednesdays 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the second half of the spring semester. Students must be able to attend this class to participate in the program.

Peer Mentors receive $800 in compensation over the course of the semester, with an additional $100 for each year they serve, with a maximum stipend of $1000.

Peer Mentors receive one credit for attending and passing the training class.

The application for the Fall 2020 program will open on Friday, Sept. 20, 2019 and the deadline to apply is noon on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019. The application form will be available on the First Year Seminar website: https://fys.udel.edu/.

The First Year Seminar Program will hold a Peer Mentor information session at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 in room 217 of Gore Hall for those seeking information on this opportunity.
