All year long, head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith talked about the energy and camaraderie around this year's University of Delaware women’s track and field team.

That was on display this weekend at Elon University in North Carolina with 24 different student-athletes scoring points for a total team effort that brought the Blue Hens their first Colonial Athletic Association championship since 2014, second overall CAA championship and fifth all-time conference championship.

"It's hard to put things into words right now,” McFarlane-Smith said after the meet ended on Saturday, May 4. “I woke up two days ago with a gut feeling about this group and to see the efforts put forth all weekend, it was incredible."

Seniors Alexis Lipnicky (javelin) and Jeanette Bendolph (800m), along with freshman Halima Scott (200m) took home individual gold for the Blue Hens. Delaware claimed 16 different medals, three gold, six silver and seven bronze.

"From day one, this team was all in and pushing each other every single day,” McFarlane-Smith said. “Today, we saw the benefits of that hard work and that mentality and leadership. When you're working for something bigger than yourself, that's what it really is all about."

Lipnicky got things started on Friday night, unleashing a personal-best throw of 143 feet, 1 inch (43.62 meters) to win the javelin by exactly one centimeter over William and Mary’s Samantha Moravsky (43.61 meters).

On Saturday, Bendolph blistered the track for a meet record in the 800 meters, clipping the line in 2 minutes, 8.69 seconds, for the fourth-fastest time in school history and nearly two seconds better than her previous personal best.

Scott had an incredible debut meet for the Blue Hens, starting with a second-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 54.08 seconds. With just a few events left and her team ahead narrowly, the freshman stepped to the track and won the 200 meters to help clinch the team title.
