School of Public Policy and Administration plays key role
The University of Delaware’s School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA) is well represented in the leadership of the Association for Budgeting and Financial Management (ABFM), which held its annual conference earlier this month in Denver.
The ABFM, which is a section of the American Society for Public Administration, is the professional association of scholars and practitioners in public budgeting and financial management in the U.S. It has substantial fiduciary responsibility for Public Budgeting & Finance, the leading field journal in public budgeting and financial management.
SPPA alumnus Bryan Sullivan is the current chair of the ABFM. Sullivan, who earned his master’s degree in 1986 and his doctorate in 1993 in urban affairs and public policy, is director of management efficiency for the Delaware state Office of Management and Budget.
Dan Smith, associate professor of public policy and administration and director of the Master of Public Administration program at UD, is the association’s immediate past chair. He studies state and local government budgeting and financial management, with research that focuses on the effects of state fiscal institutions, especially balanced budget requirements.
Jonathan B. Justice, professor of public policy and administration at UD, is the incoming vice chair of the ABFM. He will later hold the position of chair-elect and then chair of the association.
In the 2019 U.S. News and World Report’s Best Graduate Schools rankings, UD’s program in public finance and budgeting was ranked among the best in the nation, at No. 17.
