The University of Delaware Department of Music opens its 2017-18 Fall Concert Season with a concert by visiting guest artists the Calidore String Quartet at 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15, at Gore Recital Hall in the Roselle Center for Arts.

This young, exciting ensemble returns to Delaware fresh from international triumphs, including the 2017 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award and the 2016 and inaugural M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition Grand Prize, the largest prize for chamber music in the world.

A new series this year — Sublime Strings — is a group of five string quartet performances anchored by UD’s quartet-in-residence, the Serafin String Quartet, along with guest artists the Blair String Quartet and the Calidore String Quartet. The public is invited to buy a ticket to any performance by the Serafin, Blair or Calidore Quartets and bring a friend free to each performance.

“At the University of Delaware, we believe that a vibrant, exciting arts program is an essential element of life for our students, faculty, staff and community,” said UD President Dennis Assanis. “Performance art, especially music, transcends our differences and brings us together to share a beautiful, creative moment. UD is proud to once again offer a series of amazing performances throughout the year by extraordinary guest artists, accomplished faculty, and talented students.”

Other highlights of the fall season include world-class guest artists James Stern, violin, in recital on Oct. 15 and Julie Landsman, principal horn of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, on Oct. 28. Distinguished faculty perform at the Faculty Gala on Sept. 23, Faculty Jazz on Oct. 16, and in acclaimed resident ensembles and faculty artist recitals throughout the semester.

Students perform in the 300-plus UD Marching Band at UD football games home and away, in the award-winning UD Chorale, UD Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and UD Opera Theatre. The wildly popular Chamber Orchestra Cinema Series continues with Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger (1927), a silent movie with live orchestral accompaniment scheduled at 7 p.m., Oct. 20, in Gore Recital Hall. In addition, individual student and studio recitals throughout the semester are frequent and free.

The University of Delaware Department of Music leads the state of Delaware’s thriving arts scene in total music performances, producing and presenting more than 250 events each year.

Tickets for selected events — at $5 for students, $10 for faculty and staff, alumni and seniors, and $15 for adults — are on sale in advance by phone. Tickets also will be sold at the door for performances, subject to availability, with payment by cash or check only. Individual student recitals and studio recitals are free.

Department of Music

For more than 60 years, the University Of Delaware Department Of Music has been dedicated to the musical growth of its students and the cultural enrichment of the community, offering a range of music majors and minors and presenting a variety of public performances.

In addition to programs for music majors and minors, the department offers classes and activities for the general student population. Approximately 1,000 students enroll each year in music appreciation courses, and more than 500 students earn academic credit by participating in the department's music ensembles and performance programs.

The Department of Music, in combination with the Resident Ensemble Players, is proud to offer a large variety of public performances throughout the year in numerous University venues and in the region.
