Eight Blue Hens gain All-CAA accolades in women's lacrosse

Eight University of Delaware women's lacrosse players have earned All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) postseason accolades, as selected by conference head coaches.

The eight awards mark the most for UD as a member of the CAA and the most since 1998 when Delaware was a part of the America East Conference.

Junior Becky Gohsler led the way with All-CAA first team honors for the first time in her career.

The CAA also honored senior co-captains Mary Abram and Coley Ricci in addition to junior goalie Taylor Carpentier with second team accolades.

Additionally, freshmen Mia DeRuggiero, Christine Long and Sydney Rausa were named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

Sophomore Maura McNutt, a nursing major, was recognized for her work in the classroom as an All-Academic Team awardee.

Gohsler is currently fourth in the CAA with 2.53 goals per game and leads the Hens with 43 points on 34 goals and nine assists to go along with 38 draw controls, 33 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers. A two-time CAA player of the week, the midfielder is fourth in program history with 100 career draw controls.

Abram earns CAA recognition for the first time in her career and is having a career year in her final season in a UD uniform. Entering weekend play, the defender has registered 32 draw controls, 27 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers while starting all 16 games for the Blue Hens.

Ricci, a preseason All-CAA honorable mention selection, is also receiving postseason accolades for the first time as she has produced 36 draw controls, 19 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls to go along with 16 goals and seven assists.

Carpentier earns a second team nod in back-to-back seasons in the cage for UD. The goalie is second in the CAA with an 8.48 goals against average, fourth with a .458 save percentage and fourth with 6.88 saves per game.

DeRuggiero, a two-time CAA rookie of the week, recorded 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) with 14 ground balls, seven caused turnovers and six draw controls during regular season action. Long tallied 22 points (19 goals, three assists) with 15 ground balls and six draw controls while Rausa finished third for the Hens with 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists in addition to 13 ground balls, six draw controls and five caused turnovers.

Haley Warden of James Madison was named the 2017 CAA player of the year while Dukes head coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe was named coach of the year. Olivia Conti of Towson was named the defensive player of the year while Hofstra's Alyssa Parrella was named the rookie of the year.

UD returns to the CAA tournament for the first time since 2015 on Friday, May5, as the fourth-seeded Blue Hens take on top-seeded James Madison with a 4 p.m. draw.
