Blue Hens earn All-East honors in three events at ECAC championships

The University of Delaware closed out another outstanding performance at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships on Sunday, March 5, as the Blue Hens earned All-East honors in three different events on the way to a top 20 team finish at the three-day meet held at Boston University

Junior Liz McGroarty led the way for the Hens with two All-East citations as she placed third in the mile run with a personal best time of 4:50.44 and teamed with sophomore Jeanette Bendolph, junior Angie Spadaccini and senior Betsy Erlanger to shatter the UD record in the 4x800 meter relay (8:57.32) for the second straight day and post a fourth place showing.

Also for the Hens, junior Sarah Hillman earned All-East honors for the third straight year as she placed third in the shot put with a toss of 48-4.5.

“We have more work to do to prepare for our spring championship but we are definitely heading in the right direction,” said UD head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith. “It is remarkable to compete among the top teams in the East and achieve all ECAC performances. I am very proud of our individual and team effort this weekend.”

Despite ending a streak of three straight years with an ECAC individual champion, the Hens did post All-East performances (top eight) for the 11th straight year.

Albany took the team championship from among 43 teams and was followed by Liberty, Monmouth, James Madison and Connecticut in the top five. UD finished 18th with 17 points.

The meet ended the indoor track and field season for the Blue Hens. UD will open the 2017 outdoor campaign March 17 at the University of Maryland Invitational.
