Registration is open now for fall courses at the University of Delaware’s lifelong learning programs in Dover, Lewes and Ocean View, with fall catalogs available online.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at the University of Delaware – affectionately nicknamed “OLLI” – are membership organizations for adults 50 and over to take and teach classes together with no grades, exams or educational prerequisites.

Totaling nearly 4,000 statewide, members come from different educational backgrounds and all walks of life, attending from all parts of Delaware, as well as Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

Members are passionate about the program’s opportunities for learning and camaraderie. “Having the opportunity to pursue my passion for lifelong learning through OLLI has been pure joy!” comments OLLI member Sue Claire Harper of Rehoboth. “As I have explained to my friends who are not familiar with OLLI, attending classes is like having an endless source of ‘mind candy.’”

Over 900 classes were offered statewide last year. Examples of fall courses in Dover include The Art of LP Album Covers, Computer Security, and Introduction to Genealogy with Delaware Public Archives.

In Lewes, courses include Personalities of the American Revolution, Conversational German, and Memoir Writing.

In Ocean View, fall courses include Elder Law, Panama Canal History, and AARP Smart Driver.

Fall classes start on Sept. 5.

Several OLLI open house and in-person registration events are planned for July and August. Guests will have the chance to meet the instructors and fellow students, visit classrooms and enjoy light refreshments. Events are scheduled as follows:

• Lewes — Tuesday and Wednesday, July 25 and 26, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (Fred Thomas Building, 520 Dupont Ave., Lewes)

• Dover — Wednesday, Aug. 23, 9:30-noon (1201 College Park Dr., Suite 101 College Business Park, Dover)

• Ocean View — Wednesday, Aug. 30, 10-11:30 a.m. (Ocean View Town Hall and Community Center, 32 West Ave., Ocean View)

• All events are open to the public and refreshments are served.

There is also an OLLI program in Wilmington. For the Wilmington OLLI, fall registration begins July 24, with an open house scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Goodstay Center, 2600 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington.
