NC State's Barroqueiro named UD women's soccer head coach

Mike Barroqueiro, who has built an impressive resume at the NCAA Division I level as an assistant and head coach over the last decade, has been selected as the new women’s soccer head coach at the University of Delaware, Chrissi Rawak, UD director of athletics and recreation services, announced Wednesday.

A former head coach at Iona College, Barroqueiro has spent the last four seasons at North Carolina State University, where he helped the Wolfpack reach new heights over the last four seasons with head coach Tim Santoro.

"We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Mike to the University of Delaware as our new women’s soccer head coach,” said Rawak. “He is a one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the nation and has proven in a short period of time to be an outstanding leader of student-athletes, an excellent recruiter, and a great tactician of the game. He brings a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm and I know he will have a great impact on our team immediately.”

Barroqueiro becomes just the second head coach in UD women’s soccer history as he replaces Scott Grzenda, who led the Blue Hens for the previous 26 seasons before stepping down following the 2016 campaign.

“I would like to thank Chrissi Rawak, Jenn Judy, Jacqui Schuman and everyone who I was fortunate enough to meet throughout this process for being so generous with their time and so welcoming to both myself and my family,” said Barroqueiro. “Delaware is an ideal location with a beautiful campus and has a prestigious academic reputation and highly-competitive athletic atmosphere, but I realized quickly that it’s the people that make this place truly special. I couldn't be more excited to join the Blue Hen family and lead our women's soccer program. The future is bright for Blue Hen soccer and I'm very proud to be a part of that. I would also like to thank Tim Santoro and the players back at NC State for a special four years. We made some great memories and I wish them nothing but the best moving forward."

A 2005 graduate of Rutgers University, Barroqueiro served as associate head coach at North Carolina State the last four seasons and this past fall led the Wolfpack to its best season in 21 years as the squad went 11-9-2, posted two victories in the NCAA Tournament, its first NCAA appearance since 1996, and earned its first-ever NCAA Sweet 16 berth.

The Wolfpack downed No. 8 ranked and Big 10 champion Minnesota in the first round and knocked off No. 19 ranked and West Coast Conference champion Pepperdine before falling to Santa Clara with a berth in the Elite Eight on the line.

The entire North Carolina State coaching staff was named the 2016 NSCAA Southeast staff of the year and was elected as finalists for the NSCAA national staff of the year. The team posted its highest win total since 1996, its highest conference win total since 1995, defeated eight ranked teams, and was ranked as high as No. 17 in the national polls.

"This is an exciting time for Mike and his family, as well as, the University of Delaware,” said North Carolina State’s Santoro. “While Mike will be missed, he's taking the next logical step in his career and the vacancy he leaves is a better job because of his dedication at NC State over the last four years."
