Marinaccio, Spadafino selected 2017 UD baseball captains
Blue Hen junior pitchers Ron Marinaccio and Nick Spadafino have been named University of Delaware baseball captains for the 2017 season, UD head coach Jim Sherman announced on Thursday.
Marinaccio is one of the top pitchers on the Blue Hens squad. Last season he went 7-4, tying him with Brandon Walter for the team lead in victories. The righty was named Colonial Athletic Association pitcher of the week (March 14) last season, and was named to the preseason All-CAA first team.
Spadafino is also one of the top returning pitchers on this year's team. Projected to be the Saturday starter, Spadafino provided nice depth out of bullpen a season ago, serving in multiple roles. He picked up five wins and recorded a save.
“It gives me great pleasure to announce our 2017 captains Nick Spadafino and Ron Marinaccio," Sherman said. "They both continue the long tradition of UD captains that demonstrate great character, leadership and dedication. They both realize the tremendous responsibility placed on them to represent our fine university, our players, coaches and our state."
The Blue Hens open the 2017 season in Kissimmee, Florida, where they will participate in the Diamond 9 Sunshine State Games. The four-team tournament features Atlantic Coast Conference school Pittsburgh, Big Ten member Ohio State and Kansas State of the Big 12.
