April 13: Excavating Troy
April 05, 2017
Archaeologist asks: Was there a Trojan War?
Archaeologist C. Brian Rose will give an illustrated lecture on recent excavations at Troy at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 13, in 140 Smith Hall on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus.
The talk, “Was There A Trojan War? Assessing the Evidence: Excavations at Troy, 1988-2012,” is free and open to the public.
Rose’s lecture will focus on recently excavated material at Troy that has been linked to the Trojan War and its aftermath.
He will give an overview of the defenses of the Trojan citadel during the Bronze Age, the character of the destructions and the exploitation of the war stories by later residents at Troy for economic purposes.
Rose is James B. Pritchard Professor of Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania and curator-in-charge, Mediterranean Section, at the university’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. He is also the immediate past president of the Archaeological Institute of America and a trustee of the American Academy in Rome.
The lecture is hosted by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures’ Ancient Greek and Roman Studies program. For more information, contact Annette Giesecke at alt@udel.edu or 302-831-6882.
