UD Latino Heritage Month activities continue through Nov. 6
The University of Delaware will continue to mark Latino Heritage Month 2016, which has art, social justice and liberation as its primary themes, through Nov. 6.
Activities began Sept. 15 with a Latino Heritage Month Extravaganza presentation by national poet laureate Juan Felipe Herrera and Delaware’s “Twin Poets.”
Future events include the following:
• UDecide voter registration: Monday, Sept. 26, and Thursday, Sept. 29, noon-3 p.m., Trabant University Center patio, and Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2-5 p.m., Perkins Student Center concourse.
• Comida Latino: Wednesday, Sept. 28, the Latin food festival, dinner only, in Rodney, Pencader and Russell campus dining halls. The festival will feature cuisine from Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Nicaragua, Cub, Colombia and Ecuador.
• Elizabeth Acevedo: Tuesday, Oct. 11, 6 p.m., Trabant University Center lounge, spoken word performance. Through poetry infused with hip-hop and bolero, Acevedo uses words to explore issues of gender, race, culture and socio-economics.
• Making It Home, Youth Empowerment Performance Project: Thursday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m., Mitchell Hall. Making It Home tells of the journey of six LGBTQ young people of color in search of their inner homes.
• Fiesta Latina: Saturday, Oct. 15, 8:30 p.m., Trabant University Center Multipurpose Room. The annual celebration will feature live music and dance lessons.
• Latin Voyages: The Sphinx Virtuosi: Saturday, Oct. 22, 3 p.m., Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts.
• Guallando Latin Festival: Sunday, Nov. 6, 6 p.m., Perkins Student Center West Lounge. The cultural festival will feature music, performances and food.
UD's Latino Heritage Month celebration is a collaborative effort between the Division of Student Life's Center for Black Culture, Office of the Dean of Students, and Residence Life and Housing; student groups HOLA, Campus Alliance de La Raza and Chi Upsilon Sigma; Dining Services; Department of English; Center for Global and Area Studies; and Latin American and Iberian Studies.
