University of Delaware alumna Casey Lyons, a regional All-American women’s lacrosse player who graduated in May, has not quite hung up her cleats. The Georgetown, Ontario, native will suit up for Team Canada this weekend at the Team USA Fall Classic in nearby Maryland.

Lyons was one of 41 women selected to move on in the tryout process in determining which athletes will represent their home country at the 2017 FIL Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford, England.

A three-time IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region and All-Colonial Athletic Association first team honoree in her three seasons with the Blue Hens, Lyons finished her illustrious career ninth all-time with 65 assists, 13th with 168 points and tied for 19th with 103 goals.

The fall classic, which will be held Oct. 8-9, at Tierney Field on the grounds of the newly minted US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Maryland, will feature a series of exhibition games against some of the best teams in the world. Team Canada will join the defending world champion United States squad, 2005 gold medalists Australia and England, host of the 2017 tournament.

The team’s staff, led by head coach Scott Teeter and program director Gary Gait, were part of the group that helped filter through 127 tryout applications. Of those applicants, 79 players were selected to participate in the team’s first identification camp, held in mid-August, after which nearly half of them were eliminated from contention.

In addition to competing at the FIL World Cup, the 2017 national team will also have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their sport to a new global audience when lacrosse makes its multi-sport games debut at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland. Canada will compete against the host country, as well as the USA, Australia, Great Britain and Japan.
