UD field hockey team still No. 8 in latest national poll

With a nine-game winning streak and overall mark of 13-2, the University of Delaware field hockey team held steady at No. 8 in this week’s Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.

The Blue Hens collected 567 points to remain at the No. 8 slot for the second consecutive week.

UD picked up the 3-2 double overtime victory over Penn on Sunday to tie the program’s longest single-season winning streak, along with the 1998 and 2009 squads.

The Hens are currently one of just six NCAA Division I teams nationally to possess two or fewer losses this season. UD also ranks fourth nationally with 4.0 goals per game and 10.87 points per contest.

Connecticut maintained the top spot for the fourth consecutive week with 892 points and 32 first place votes as the last undefeated team in the nation at 15-0.

Moving up to No. 2 in the poll was Duke (13-2), which posted 836 points and eight first place votes to jump from the fourth spot. Syracuse (12-2) fell to No. 3 with 833 points and three first place votes while North Carolina (12-3) dropped to No. 4 with 791 points and three first place votes.

The next Penn Monto/NFHCA coaches poll will be announced on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The poll is voted on by NFHCA member coaches and has no bearing on selection into the NCAA tournament.

UD concludes regular season road play this weekend by traveling to Towson (Friday, 6 p.m.) and No. 18 American (Sunday, 1:30 p.m.).
