Students celebrate Complex Community Council elections at RSA Ball
Nearly 80 University of Delaware student leaders were officially welcomed to their Complex Community Council (CCC) positions during the Resident Student Association (RSA) Inaugural Ball held Friday, Sept. 30 in the Rodney Room of Perkins Student Center.
The ball is a way for RSA and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) to bring together current membership and new student leaders. Both RSA and NRHH are dedicated to quality residential student experiences and supporting the complex governments.
“There’s a two-part benefit [to being a part of CCC – internal and external,” said Alex Schwartz, a junior business management major and president of RSA. “Internal, you have the leadership skill growth, and of course, the resume building. External, you get to see yourself as an agent of change. When you become a member of a community, you have a responsibility to make it better. CCC gives you the access, the resources and the experience to do that.”
CCCs are in-hall complex governments that provide students the opportunity to make their communities the best they can be. Through CCC participation, students find easy ways to get involved, develop leadership and have a direct impact on where they live.
Steven Mirsen, the new president of the Redding and Gilbert CCC, wants to go into law policy. “I thought it would be good way to get a head start and contribute to the complex,” he said. “I want to make a better year for me, and everyone.”
“I thought it would be good leadership experience,” said sophomore chemical engineering major Ryan O’Donnell, the new president of the Independence CCC (ICE). “I knew it would be fun working with new people in the complex.”
Elections for the councils were held on Friday, Sept. 23.
In the first-year area, elections were held in traditional voting format. From noon to 8 p.m., more than 1,000 first-year students voted for 11 different positions.
Different than first-year, upper division CCC elections are through an application process. The residence hall and complex coordinators for each complex select the winners from their candidate pools.
In these areas, complex representation can be any class year – sophomore, junior or senior.
“It’s important to have a good community; where you can call the place you live a home,” said Tylor Matthews, the new multicultural chair of ICE and an undeclared sophomore. “I just wanted to get more involved.”
