UD freshman Prieto named CAA men's soccer rookie of week

University of Delaware freshman Fede Prieto has been named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) men's soccer rookie of the week.

The midfielder more than doubled his season goal total with three in two conference games against Drexel and Hofstra. Prieto singlehandedly led the Blue Hens to a 2-0 win over the Dragons in Philadelphia with a season-high two tallies.

In Saturday’s first place battle with the Pride, he scored the team’s lone goal as UD dropped its first CAA contest of the season.

“It has been a terrific week for Fede, who is emerging as a leader amongst a talented group,” said Ian Hennessy, UD head coach. “He seems to have found his feet in conference play and is well deserved of this week’s honor.”

Prieto is currently second on the team with five goals and 10 points. He is the first UD freshman to reach at least five goals in a season since seniors Guillermo Delgado and Jaime Martinez posted 15 and five, respectively, in 2013.

William and Mary’s Antonio Bustamante collected CAA player of the week honors while Hofstra’s Luke Brown shared rookie of the week accolades with Prieto.

The Blue Hens return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 5, as the team travels to Philadelphia for a 7 p.m. matchup at Penn in its lone contest of the week.
