Oct. 18: Asia and U.S. election

Panel discussion to focus on implications for Asia

A panel discussion, “Asia in the U.S. Presidential Election,” will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Room 104 of the Willard Hall Education Building on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by UD’s Asian Studies program and the Center for Global and Area Studies.

The discussion will focus on the U.S. presidential election and its implications for Asia. Topics are expected to include comments by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, the future of the U.S. “rebalance” in Southeast Asia, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, North Korea, burden-sharing with Japan and South Korea, Japanese rearmament, nuclear weapons in the region and other regional trade and security issues.

The panel will consist of Troy Stangarone and Alice Ba and will be moderated by Darryl Flaherty, professor of history and director of the Asian Studies program.

Stangarone is the senior director of congressional affairs and trade for the Korea Economic Institute (KEI) of America. He oversees KEI’s trade and economic initiatives, as well as the institute’s relations with Capitol Hill and the Washington, D.C., trade community; serves as the editor for KEI’s flagship publication, Korea’s Economy; and oversees KEI’s new blog, The Peninsula.

Ba, associate professor of political science and international relations at UD, teaches courses on Southeast Asia's world relations and development, Chinese politics and foreign policy, and comparative regionalisms. Her research focuses on the politics of regionalism and institutions in East Asia, especially the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and Southeast Asia's relations with major powers.
