UD's Randolph, Torzsa earn CoSIDA district academic honors

For the second straight season, University of Delaware football standout scholar-athletes Jalen Randolph and Ryan Torzsa have been selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 2 All-Academic team.

Randolph, a graduate running back, and Torzsa, a senior safety, were among 24 student-athletes from the NCAA Division I FCS and FBS levels to be honored on the team. The UD co-captains are now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, which will be announced later this month.

To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher, have sophomore or older eligibility, and be a starter or key reserve. District 2 includes all schools in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky and the District of Columbia.

Randolph earned the award for the third straight year while Torzsa was a second-time honoree. All told, UD has had 30 student-athletes named to the CoSIDA All-District team since 1980 and have had two or more students honored 14 times. UD has had a least one player honored on the team three straight years and 17 times over the last 19 seasons.

Randolph, who earned his degree in health behavior science in May and is currently enrolled in the MBA program at UD, carried a 3.61 grade point average as an undergraduate and is a four-time Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll member.

He is a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award semifinalist, a two-time FCS ADA Academic All-Star nominee, a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society, and a CAA Chuck Boone Leadership Award nominee. He currently ranks third on the team in rushing with 442 yards (5.1 average) and six touchdowns and has ran for 1,540 yards and 22 touchdowns during his four-year career in the Blue Hen backfield.

“This is a great honor for me and my family,” said Randolph. “I think it speaks to my work ethic and all the things my family tried to instill in me growing up about being a well-rounded person and really having a mindset of achievement and doing the best I can in everything I do.”

Torzsa, a finance major who carries a 3.77 grade point average, is a four-time CAA Academic Honor Roll recipient, a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society, a two-time FCS ADA Academic All-Star nominee, and a team representative and board member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

As a starter in all eight games this season, he has recorded 21 tackles, intercepted two passes, and broke up another pass attempt. In 43 career games, he has registered 75 tackles, five interceptions, four pass breakups, blocked a punt and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

“I am really appreciative of this award,” said Torzsa. “My parents always taught me to work hard in the classroom and not put all my eggs in one basket. I’ve tried to do that and attempt to find excellence in everything I do.”

Randolph becomes just the fifth player in school history to earn All-District honors three times, joining Matt Smith (1992-94), John Ahern (1999-01), Brett Veach (1999-01) and Ben Cross (2002-04). Torzsa is the first UD defensive back to be honored twice. Cross was Delaware’s last CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2004.

Randolph and Torzsa were also among seven CAA student-athletes honored among the eight all-district teams.

UD (3-5, 1-4 CAA), led by interim head coach Dennis Dottin-Carter, will continue action Saturday, Nov. 5, when the Blue Hens head to Albany for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
