In this blog series "Discussing Diversity," Kendal~Crosslands Communities Director of Communications and Public Relations Michele Berardi answers questions about diversity, equity and inclusion and how Kendal~Crosslands Communities contributes to a welcoming workplace environment for all.
What is the overall mission of Kendal~Crosslands Communities?
Kendal~Crosslands Communities is a life plan community located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. We offer independent living cottages and apartments, personal care and skilled nursing all nestled on 500 acres of rolling countryside adjacent to Longwood Gardens. We aspire to be an even more inclusive community and especially invite all people to live and work with us in a lively and nurturing culture infused with Quaker values.
How do you incorporate values of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace?
When we strive to live up to our values every day, we share the priceless gifts in each of us. Our staff members celebrate their uniqueness with events that spotlight cultural foods, we provide training on social differences and diversity topics, our benefit packages support staff members’ well-being in a holistic approach and our staff lead diversity committees that create opportunities to celebrate multiculturalism and an inclusive environment.
What DE&I programs or initiatives does the company have in place?
In addition to the above, we have many, many programs that span nearly 50 years. Some programs are resident driven; our residents helped create the Chester Charter Scholars Academy for Chester children, they conducted a Welcoming Diversity conference, they supply toys for a local low-income family early learning child center, more than 100 residents are ESL tutors, we are the premier sponsor of the MLK Community of Kennett Square and more.
How do you ensure that all employees feel welcome, including new hires and interns?
Yes, our staff members go through an all-day new hire orientation program. During the program, our values of diversity, equity and inclusion are explained.
Why do you think it’s important to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace environment?
Our vision emerges from the Quaker belief that there is that of the divine in each person. We know greater representation of people leads to a greater diversity of thought, services and support. The desire to be an inclusive community is natural to our beliefs and essential to our core priorities.
What are you looking for in UD students who want to intern or work at your company? How can they stand out when speaking with your recruiters at our career fairs?
We seek individuals who wish to contribute to the support and services of older adults and who wish to work in a team environment supported by leadership. We seek new staff members who wish to further a career, grow with the organization and would like to work in a great campus-like atmosphere.
Are you currently hiring interns or entry-level employees?
We seek interns, part-time staff and full-time employees in our healthcare and culinary departments. Chat with us and come work with us!
Anything else UD students should know about your organization?
As we sharpen our focus on the future of our community, we remain committed to ensuring our campuses are welcoming spaces for all, where each individual is heard, valued and loved.
