In this new blog series "Discussing Diversity," Whiting-Turner Contracting Company Recruiting Coordinator Angela Walker answers questions about diversity, equity and inclusion and how Whiting-Turner contributes to a welcoming workplace environment for all.
What is the overall mission of Whiting-Turner Contracting Company?
We build on our core principles to nurture a vibrant inclusive culture that reinforces consistent positive experiences and meaningful growth opportunities. This cultivates the natural emergence of diversity of talents, skillsets, experiences and partnerships that will build on our foundation to thrive by: being an advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion and providing opportunities to celebrate our culture of equity and inclusion internally and externally; approachable and accessible to employees to create the right connections; being an available resource and providing the tools for operating groups to support deliberate initiatives; and promoting qualitative and thought challenging learning opportunities.
How do you incorporate values of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace?
Each of our employees is an integral part of our impressive, unique culture. Whiting-Turner hires, educates and advances the most talented individuals regardless of their race, sexual orientation, religion, gender, age, disability status or any other dimension of diversity. Success is dependent upon sharing of ideas—an exchange that is most beneficial when a wide variety of knowledge, viewpoints and experiences are heard. We strongly value the variation of backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs held by our employees, and we have created a community grounded in collaboration, respect and belonging.
What DE&I programs or initiatives does the company have in place?
Employee resource groups (ERGs) exist as a resource to foster an inclusive environment aligned Whiting-Turner's mission and values. Our groups include BERG (Black Employee Resource Group), WOW (Women of Whiting-Turner) and HOW (Hispanic Outreach Workgroup). Each operating office has its very own DE&I team and the company has a DE&I Council, as well.
What are you looking for in UD students who want to intern or work at your company? How can they stand out when speaking with your recruiters at our career fairs?
Students should be ambitious, multi-taskers, continuous learners, team-oriented and responsible. They should definitely research our company prior to the career fairs on our website at whiting-turner.com and they should know what construction management is.
Are you currently hiring interns or entry-level employees?
We are hiring both interns and entry-level employees for all our locations. Open positions include interns, project engineers, field engineers, BIM/DVC engineers, scheduling engineers, EH&S managers and marketing. Check out our Handshake page for more information.
