In this new blog series "Discussing Diversity," International SOS Human Resources Director Holly Krop answers questions about diversity, equity and inclusion and how International SOS contributes to a welcoming workplace environment for all.

What is the overall mission of International SOS?

Our mission is to pioneer the international health and security risk services sector.

How does International SOS incorporate values of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace?

International SOS incorporates diversity, equity and inclusion in our hiring practices by ensuring all open positions are posted for internal and external candidates. We also require all hiring managers to go through training on interviewing skills and unconscious bias. As a global organization, we have staff in more than 1,000 locations in 90 countries so our employee population is always diverse and unique.

Our Diversity & Inclusion Statement reads: “International SOS is proud of our cultural, racial and gender diversity. It is one of our main strengths as a company that reflects the wide and diverse population we serve. We are committed to creating an environment which is free from discrimination and bias wherein people can fulfill their potential. We collect and analyze data related to our hiring and promotional practices to ensure our DE&I efforts are reflected or make adjustments when they are not. We strive to ensure that our workforce is truly representative of all different sectors of society. We strive to ensure that each employee is respected. By leveraging the unique backgrounds, perspectives and experiences of our people, we believe we can improve the provision of excellent customer service to our equally diverse customers. We do this by demonstrating equality, fairness and respect for all in our employment; in making any purchasing decisions; opposing and preventing unlawful discrimination on the basis of age, disability, gender assignment, marital status, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. We are committed to actively seek to recruit for diverse populations; encourage equality and diversity in the workplace, addressing complaints and offering training development to all staff; ensure decisions concerning staff are based on merit; reviewing employment practices and procedures; and providing diversity and inclusion awareness training to all employees.”

What DE&I initiatives does the company have in place?

Our organization collects and analyzes global employment data related to our hiring and promotion practices to ensure all employees have the same opportunities within our organization. We have a female mentoring program where high potential female employees are assigned a senior executive mentor to prepare them for an executive level role. We celebrate diverse religious holidays and regional events, which includes guest speakers, food and educational opportunities. On a global and regional basis, we celebrate International Women’s Day. When recruiting, we work with universities and organizations (such as First Nations, Americas Veterans Association, etc.) to bring in diverse candidates into our company. We also partner with HBCUs in various regions for our recruiting efforts and provide support and training on interviews and resume writing for upcoming college graduates. We provide a monthly regional DE&I newsletter to offer educational and informative information on our DE&I agenda and activities.

How do you ensure that all employees feel welcome, including new hires and interns?

We have a policy where all new hires must attend a mandatory Human Resource Induction program where we share the company’s history, mission and values, as well as the importance of valuing our colleagues and associates. During this program, we share our diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, such as our global holiday calendar and how to join regional DE&I committees. We volunteer at various regional organizations, such as shelters for LGBTQ+ groups, help train and offer scholarships for First Nations young adults and hold collection drives to help local communities. We also offer one volunteer day off per year with pay.

Why do you think it’s important to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace environment?

As a global organization, we inherently hire diverse candidates due to our need for different language, cultural, medical and security expertise so it is important for us to demonstrate to potential candidates and exiting employees that we are an inclusive organization.

What are you looking for in UD students who want to intern or work at International SOS? How can they stand out when speaking with your recruiters at our career fairs?

Our core values are passion, expertise, respect and care, so we look for candidates who display all four of these during our interview and selection process. At International SOS, we save lives every day and each of our functions help to support our teams that do this, so we look for people who can demonstrate compassion for others, as well as wanting to help or care for others. For expertise, we look for candidates to be able to share their experience with us in additional to bringing core competencies to the role. People who stand out are individuals who have travel experience or strong knowledge of geographic regions, cultures and/or advanced studies that we can leverage within our organization. We also look for people who can bring a new perspective to finding solutions or supporting our clients.

Are you currently hiring interns or entry-level employees?

We do hire interns and entry-level employees. All interested candidates should review open positions on our careers website at internationalsos.com.
