Blue Hen Leadership Program (BHLP)
BHLP is your chance to grow as a leader and find your people at the University of Delaware. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, BHLP lets you design a leadership journey that fits your goals, interests and schedule.
Dive in by completing one or more certificates to build specific skills, gain practical leadership tools, explore who you are as a leader and learn how to make an impact.
BHLP is a community—students form meaningful friendships, strong support networks and connections that last well beyond graduation. You’ll join a diverse community of Blue Hens from different backgrounds, majors and experiences who are driven by growth, purpose and impact. Whether you’re just getting started or ready to take your leadership to the next level, BHLP meets you where you are and helps you become who you want to be.
Emerging Leader Certificate
The Emerging Leader Certificate is a foundational leadership certificate that meets for one hour per week for eight weeks. Students will learn some leadership theories, values and strengths, goal setting and how to work across differences and commonalities. This is a great place to start your leadership journey if you haven’t figured out where you want to go.
Creativity in Leadership Certificate
In today's dynamic world leadership demands more than traditional strategies; it requires creative thinking and innovation. The Creativity in Leadership Certificate will enable students to develop imaginative approaches to problem-solving, explore their own creative capacities and develop the creative confidence to step forward and drive innovation and change with their leadership. There will be work both in meetings and between meetings for students to complete.
Leadership and Wellbeing Certificate
With mental health awareness growing, how can we, as leaders, help a team pursue our goals when someone is struggling? Learn self-care skills, about the dimensions of wellness and about different leadership styles designed to support the growth of individuals. Students will design a wellbeing plan and know how to best serve their community while not pushing themselves beyond their limits.
Community Engagement Certificate
This certificate helps students gain understanding of effective community engagement practices and explores concepts such as collaboration, empowerment and social justice, and examines their role in creating community partnerships. We will also investigate leadership styles and strategies that are effective in community settings and evaluate the impact of leadership on community outcomes and personal development.
Project Management Certificate
The Project Management Certificate teaches students agency and autonomy in their work. Throughout the eight-week certificate, students will design and plan their own project with guidance and advice from the instructor. Students will work independently both within and outside of the weekly meetings so they can grow and practice their project management skills.
Leadership Portfolio Certificate
This certificate offers students the opportunity to compile all their leadership knowledge, learning and experiences throughout their time at UD and beyond into a portfolio and presentation that will assist with interviews for internships, graduate school and full-time employment. Comprehensive reflection and demonstrated leadership learning are key components of this portfolio as analyzed along a path of personal and professional growth. Only students nearing graduation should register for this certificate.
