Through a long-term disability insurance plan, the University provides for continuing income to eligible employees in the event of total disability. Visiting employee classifications are not eligible for this benefit.
Eligible employees may apply for benefits through this program if total disability, due to illness or injury, causes absence from work for six months or longer. There is a six-month waiting period before disability income can begin, but it is University policy to pay some salary during this waiting period.
The standard option has a $10,000 maximum monthly benefit, and the high option a $15,000 maximum monthly benefit.
Through the State of Delaware and Hartford Insurance Company eligible participants in the State Employee's Pension Plan are provided income protection during periods of short-term or long-term disability.
If illness, pregnancy, or injury of a temporary nature causes absence from work for more than 30 days, eligible employees may apply for benefits directly with the Hartford. If approved employees may receive 75% of their base salary for up to 182 days under the short term disability insurance plan (this includes the waiting period). Employees disabled for more than 182 days may further apply for long term disability benefits with the Hartford. If approved employees may receive 60% of their base salary if they have selected the standard option or 66 2/3 % of their base salary if they have selected the high option.
The standard option has an $8,000 maximum monthly benefit as of July 1, 2007.
