Faculty experts discuss research of newly minted Nobel laureates
University of Delaware’s faculty experts will discuss the research and careers of the 2023 Nobel Prize winners at this year’s Nobel Symposium on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Harker ISE Laboratory Atrium.
Hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, this annual talk gives an opportunity to learn more about the prizes and their winners from faculty who conduct research in similar fields.
Speakers include:
- Jodi Hadden-Perilla, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will discuss the Medicine Prize winners, Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman and their work in the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.
- Sarah Wasserman, associate professor of English and director of the Center for Material and Culture Studies, will speak about playwright, novelist, and poet Jon Fosse, winner of the Prize in Literature.
- Emil Hernandez-Pagan, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will explain the work of Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexei Ekimov, recipients of the Prize in Chemistry for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.
- Farley Grubb, professor of both economics and history, will speak on the work of Claudia Goldin, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, for her work on the history of women in the workforce.
- Barry Walker, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, will discuss Nobel Prize in Physics winners Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier and their discovery of a new way to explore the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules.
- Rudi Matthee, John A. Munroe and Dorothy L. Munroe Chair of History and professor of women and gender studies, will speak about Nobel Peace prize winner Narges Mohammadi and her fight against the oppression of women in Iran.
