Community Engagement Scholars

If you have a passion for tackling critical societal issues and contributing to the public good, Community Engagement Scholars is for you.


Whether you’re an engineering major interested in infrastructure in developing countries, a science major interested in environmental issues, a business student interested in addressing income disparity, a health major interested in health inequality, or a liberal arts major interested in criminal justice, this program provides an opportunity to explore community engagement with students who share your values.

How to Apply

 

The fall 2025 application is now open. All incoming freshman or transfer students admitted to UD's Newark campus or a Flex Pathway program can apply by completing the program’s interest form on their student portal, My Blue Hen Home. Students may apply to multiple programs, but will only be admitted to one.

 

The priority deadline for Scholars & Fellows applications is March 3.

Program Highlights

You will be immersed in community engagement throughout your four years at UD with special academic and career advisement. There are opportunities to receive funding for significant projects and present your work at conferences.

Specialized Coursework

Scholars participate in  a variety of experiences that combine their academic goals and program requirements. The program includes two courses for freshmen, as well as activities throughout their four years which include:

  • One credit seminar Introduction to Civic Engagement
  • Three credit course Changing the World: The Role of Public Policy
  • The opportunity to receive funding to connect theory to practice through semester based and summer community engagement immersion programs
  • On-the-ground experience through alternative breaks and service-learning abroad opportunities
  • Completing an eportfolio
  • Co-curricular service

Community Engagement Scholars is open to incoming freshmen and transfer students admitted to UD’s Newark campus or a Flex Pathway program.

Admitted students can access the Scholars and Fellows interest form through their student portal, My Blue Hen Home. Students can express interest in multiple Scholars and Fellows programs, but will only be admitted to one.

The priority deadline for Scholars & Fellows applications is March 3, but students who apply after the priority deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.
