TRANSFORMING HEALTHCARE

For more than half a century, the Chrysler assembly plant in Newark, Delaware provided employment for generations of local residents and was an important economic asset and social presence in the city of Newark. Today, the same site is home to the University of Delaware’s College of Health Sciences which is training the next generation healthcare workforce

Our spaces on the STAR campus are the physical embodiment of the intent, mission and vision for the College of Health Sciences. They have been specially designed to enhance hands-on learning opportunities for our students, to increase collaboration and innovation, and to translate what is discovered through our research into how we deliver care in our clinics. These priorities create a unique energy in our spaces--with a mix of researchers in the labs, faculty in the classrooms, community members visiting the clinics and participating in research, and students involved in all of those activities

The Tower at STAR

STAR Tower

The Tower at STAR is an integral part of the College of Health Sciences’ mission to train the next generation of healthcare professionals in a collaborative and inclusive interprofessional learning environment. The design of the 120,000 square foot building is based on the science of health with an emphasis on prevention and wellness.

The desire for constant collisions that foster spontaneous ideas and innovations can be equated to a theory referred to as the butterfly effect. It states that the smallest change or interaction in one location can prompt dramatic change in another. The design for the Tower at STAR reflects this by taking on the abstract form of a butterfly emerging from a base. The imagery will stand over the STAR campus as an iconic reminder of the change and innovation that interactions on the campus strive to create.

Health Sciences Complex

Health Sciences Complex

The Health Sciences Complex focuses on translating what we learn in research to everyday practice. Discovery is connected to delivery and experimental learning for our students, not just in theory but in practice. Researchers take the latest research and translate that into cutting-edge care in our clinics, which are open to the public.
