Mathematics Secondary Education Program

Program Description

The BS and the BA in Secondary Math Education prepare students to teach math to students in grades 7 to 12. Math Education majors will acquire knowledge of the fundamental areas of mathematics as well as the fundamentals of teaching. They will spend their last semester teaching at a local high school or middle school under the supervision of an experienced teacher. Upon graduation, students will receive an institutional recommendation for certification to teach in any state in the U.S. through reciprocal agreement.

The BA degree is for students aiming for breadth in the liberal arts whereas the BS degree is for students who want a deeper knowledge of mathematics.

Note 1: All teacher education candidates must meet established criteria for admission into upper-division professional education study. These criteria include: minimum cumulative grade point average; minimum grade point average in courses within their major; and successful completion (grade of C- or better) of prerequisite courses and field experiences.
