Olé! Blue Hen Alumni Travel to Spain

In September 2024, a group of Blue Hen alumni and their partners or friends traveled to Andalucia, Spain—a trip hosted by the UD Alumni Association (UDAA).

While there, they explored the Alhambra palace and fortress complex, enjoyed traditional flamenco performances and experienced the gem of Antequera, known for its religious architecture and beautiful natural setting. They peeked over the edges of El Tajo Gorge and adventured in Seville, the capital city of the province of Andalucia.

“The trip was great,” said Millie Miller, AS97. “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and traveling with other Blue Hens. Andalucia had a lot to offer and our weather was perfect every single day.”

Another Blue Hen on the trip, Lloyd Matthews, BE73M, has visited 70 countries in his life and said that this excursion to Andalucia is a close second to his favorite trip to the Galapagos.

“This format of staying in one hotel and traveling the wheels of a hub around Andalucia worked perfectly,” he said. “I learned so much about the history, culture, architecture, geography, people and cuisine of the area—it was amazing.”

Matthews acknowledged that, as a graduate alumnus of UD who spent seven years working and earning his MBA, he had some apprehension about traveling with an alumni group who may have had a stronger connection to each other.

“My fear of us not fitting into the group were totally unfounded,” he said. “The relationships were as good as the trip.”

Sarah Doelp, AS82 said, “I most enjoyed experiences that provided a glimpse into Spanish life, such as talking with locals (when our luggage was lost, venturing into town to replace essentials and talking with shopkeepers) or enjoying a home-cooked meal at a vineyard off the beaten track. It was fun experiencing this with other alumni.”

The UDAA is planning 2025 trips, which will be posted here soon.
