Volunteer Shout-Outs - May 2024

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations relies on a team of dedicated Blue Hen volunteers to strengthen the connections between alumni, students and the University through a variety of programs and events. Volunteers' many contributions include planning and helping to lead regional, affinity and reunion events, offering mentorship and professional development opportunities to students and serving as proud ambassadors of UD.

Here, we regularly spotlight volunteers that enhance the UD experience for students and alumni.

May 2024 Spotlights:  Carole Baker, EHD89 and Erica Walsh, AS14, BE14, BE21M

"I feel good knowing my contribution, regardless of size, made someone’s experience at UD a little bit better!"

Carole Baker has participated as a Blue Hen Regional Ambassador for the Kent & Sussex Blue Hen Network for the past eight years! She has planned numerous events and always encourages attendance through her local Blue Hen network. Earlier this month, she was the volunteer who raised the most funds and brought in the most donors during  I Heart UD Giving Day (IHUDD) with $1,445 dollars raised through eight donors.

Baker is an enthusiastic Blue Hen whose loyalty to UD goes beyond generously sharing her time and talents. She is a long-time True-Blue Hen and has been a Delaware Diamonds Society level donor for fifteen consecutive years.

She and her husband, Chris Baker, EG89—a member of UD’s Board of Trustees—have been “official” UD Football season ticket holders since 2008 and have missed only a few games since their freshman year. In fact, they attended the 2003 National Championship game in Chattanooga, TN, and the 2010 National Championship game in Frisco, TX. One item on their bucket list is to go to every home and away game in one season.

Fun UD Fact:My husband and I are both UD grads and so is our oldest daughter and her husband. Our daughter met her husband on a UD study abroad trip during her senior year at UD.”

Let’s hear from her as to why she gives back to UD: There are so many worthy things to support. I feel good knowing my contribution, regardless of size, made someone’s experience at UD a little bit better!”

"UD became my home away from home and challenged me to be the best version of me."

Erica Walsh’s philanthropic activities at UD began when she was a student and participated in many clubs and the various fundraising efforts for them. Walsh currently serves on the UDAA Board of Directors and is a member of the UDAA Awards Committee, and she is also a 10th Reunion Ambassador helping to plan the Class of 2014’s celebration over Alumni Weekend, May 31-June 2, 2024. In addition, she presented our current graduating UD Student Alumni Ambassadors with handwritten congratulatory notes.

Fun UD Fact: Walsh was a member of the 2013 UD Homecoming Court

Let’s hear from Erica as to why she gives back to UD:

“I give back to the UD community because of all the opportunities I received as a student and beyond. As an out-of-state student, UD became my home away from home and challenged me to be the best version of me. As a volunteer I want to provide current students with an even better experience than I had as a student and to provide alumni opportunities to feel the Blue Hen spirit wherever life has taken them.”
